Hello, new to site and wanted to say Hi, before I started asking questions.
I have a 1988 F-150 XLT Lariat with the 4.9L six and manual trans.
My problem is when turning off the key to shut off truck the key goes to the off position and the steering wheel locks but the vehicle does not shut off and all of the indicator lights light up. All electrical power stays on.
I have been told that it is the Ignition Starter Switch.
Can anyone help me with this. Thanks Gene
Sorry for resurecting a thread with no action for a few days .... My switch did this today ..... must have been the complaining about the 90 Camry on the Toyota Forums with bad keys and ignition switch problems ... and saying why can't it hold up like my 90 F150.
I removed the trim near the back of the steering column and was able to turn the truck off by moving the rod back once I turned the key to off. I can start it, just have to turn it off with the rod, so I think it is either the end of the rod or whatever it connects to. Removed Lock Cylinder and it looks fine so the part it somewhere in the column .... how do I disassemble it further? I have pulled the wheel off and unscrewed the signal mechanism and remove some other parts, but don't see how to get it apart.
You have to drive out the pivot pin(s?)...it's been a while. You also have to remove the ignition switch with the key in and turned a notch or two (I think), then there's a button underneath in a recess.
While it is for a 85 Bronco and an automatic, it is at least for the tilt column .... and most parts look about the same. I will probably be performing this operation over the next few evenings, tonight I get the part.
I am still fiddling with mine to get it working right. The new actuator area where the pin goes in to keep the rod in place was a little taller I think. Well anyway, when the wheel was tilted in its second from all the way up position it would hit on the cover ... so I ground down that area of the cover (not noticable when assembled), now I am trying to get everything lined up correctly.
