I continue to have a whining power steering pump, at least I think it's the pump, after changing my gearbox. I have done the front end in the air lock to lock thing a few times.
I saw a post about replacing power steering fluid with trans fluid. Does trans fluid have better viscosity for power steering? Curious to what the benefit or draw back would be.
The stuff that auto parts stores sell in bottles labeled power steering fluid should be illegal. It's just thin hydraulic oil. It doesn't have any anti-wear or anti-foam additives. It is not what Ford or a good number of other manufacturers recommend.
80s Fords are terrible with power steering noises, the setup on my diesel was very loud. When I did the swap, I refilled the system with Mercon, and it's been fairly quiet since.
I put the Lucas in mine when I did the conversion and never had any noise. It was an old pump so I was worried about it leaking, ended up being the box that leaked.....
Okay thanks guys. I remember the old days of type F trans fluid specific to Fords, not sure though if that still applies things have got so generalized lately.
If I make the jump to ATF do I need to flush the entire system? I just replaced the gearbox and don't want to chance jacking it up.
