76 power steering fluid

My book says to put type f trans fluid in for my power steering fluid. It looks like somebody put regular power steering fluid in it before me. Can it hurt it or should i flush it out and put type f in it.

I have used the clear power steering (PS) by STP and other brands. It seems the clear PS fluid has additional additives and should work on your system. Alot of the newer type PS pumps require Dexron II.

P/S is just a hydraulic pump, you can put most any oil in it. I use atf because it's always handy. Don't matter type F or Dextron all the same for the P/S

I have even used 10w40 in a PS pump b4 when I did not have any PS fluid, -never hurt a thing.

older style pumps will run with any type of oil. i have been guilty of using 5w30 to fill it up. but its not a wise idea to do that to a new rack and pinion system.

I try to flush the power steering system every 50,000 to 75,000 miles of use.
You can also install an inline filter on the power steering system. Here's a very informative Forum thread - https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/s...d.php?t=454803.
