I have a fairly stock 390 in my project truck, not sure the year I think it is titled as a 72, it's a F250 4x4 with said engine np435 and divorced np205 and the kicker is has a 54 body on it. My question is, since the carb is in dire need of a rebuild it leaks for a while til it reseals it self, rebuild the 2 barrel or upgrade to a 4 barrel? I have gathered parts for a 4 barrel swap. I have an intake from a 64 t bird with carb a linkage brackets. It's an iron intake and heavy but the truck isn't light to begin with. Can these old engines benefit from good carb? And what suggestions for a carb do you all have? I may tow a camp trailer with it or daily drive it a bit but it's not an off roader. Ask that has been done with the motor is it has a set of unknown headers and a tune up to get it running descent, then I found the carb issue.

Maybe the needle set is bad letting it flood gas out of it and, or float could be to high also.

Old T-bird intake had tall ports where as the later 390 have smaller ported heads Note good for a match. A 600 cfm auto-lite or motor-craft will give the best mileage. BUT NOT THE BEST POWER. Holley 600 cfm will give about the best but 10-11 mpg is about tops.

So I understand, for the bird intake to work properly the heads would need to be used to. Mpgs aren't a concern well cause the gas gauge move down faster then the Speedo moves up I think 9 is about the best I have gotten. I have read some about the Holley truck avenger carbs as well as the avs series from edlebrock. Side note, I saw a test of Holleys stand alone wide band oxygen sensor kit, used to tune the carb set ups for some pro touring cars. I am looking in to those kids for my truck.

A brand new carb is hard to beat...it takes alot to do a really good rebuild. Most of the older carbs I look at have worn out throttle bushings.

Just keep the cfm small since your not bulding a race truck. I'm a fan of the Edelbrock style because the Holley has a gasket seam in the middle of the float bowl.

Yeah old days for the Holley where leakers at one time or another.

But the Holley people got a little smarter and started making better gaskets & o-ring cups for the cross over tube.

I have a 600cfm Holley 4160 in mine and have been very pleased. Like others have said don't expect any real fuel 'economy' with these 390's, but you just gotta love the sound through headers and a good exhaust!

I had a 74 f100 2wd that I daily drove for a few years. It was very stock with a 390 c6 and I loved it. It had a 2bl on it that one of my dad's friends rebuilt and tuned for me. Ran like a raped ape. But I am torn with what to do.

The IMHO best would be a 600 Holley 4180 off 79 and newer 460 truck or econoline. Factory Ford. They have annular discharge boosters for the better fuel economy. For a 390 2V motor i'd change the jets from the factory 61's to 66-68 ish range. The factory purple secondary spring to a plain colored one. If that were to create a slight bog in Your motor then go to a brown one. If you were to put a RV cam in it then I'd keep the purple spring in it.
My second choice would be the Holley 600 noted above.
