AC condenser replacement options

I need to tap in to someones head and see if anyone has an option for replacing my condenser on my 71. I have searched the internet longer than I am willing to own up to searching for one and I have had no luck other than someone on ebay wanting 225.00 for a "new" one. There are no trucks around here this year in any JY but I am wondering if there are some of these sitting on some later model trucks and if so maybe someone would have that knowledge so I can get back to searching.....

For your Factory A/C the condensor's part number was C8TZ19712A. I googled that number and an old FTE thread from 2007 popped up. I don't know if the answers on that thread will still help ya but you can try 'em. But remember, condensors designed for R12 will not cool the newer freons as well as a condensor designed for them.

Thanks for the info jeff....I am hoping that someone will chime in with a part number or particular truck I can get one off of. And then I can always just get me some R12. Its a little more expensive but will work for what I have. Its that or suck it up and go aftermarket and I choke on the thought of paying that.

In that 2007 thread Bill mentioned the C8TZ19712A was replaced by a couple Dent part numbers. Depending on the drier placement. None of my slides show this replacement though!???!!!??? So check out that thread and try finding a Dent one that'll work.

I did look at it but only able to view on phone, will have to wait till I get to work tomorrow. If I remember correctly the difference was the C changed to a D. I will do a search tomorrow and hopefully find something. I have too many things going on at once. I took my grill off to take out some dents and clean it up, took out condenser and dryer to hopefully get fixed, and replacingthe front end all at the same time. I hope to be able to put it all back together at one time.

El Jeffe: Are you sure Bill (I assume that's me-NumberDummy) said the condenser was replaced? 1990/91 O-S-I catalogs (on microfiche) make no mention.

1968/72 F100/350: Factory installed integral A/C is combined with the heater. The A/C controls are located in the same panel as the heater controls.

C8TZ-19712-A .. A/C Condenser-Use with factory installed integral A/C (Motorcraft YJ-18) / Obsolete

1968/71 F100/350 - 1972 F100/350 before serial number N40,001.

No Ford dealer or obsolete parts vendor has any.
-------------------------------------------------------
D2TZ-19712-A .. A/C Condenser-Use with factory installed integral A/C (Motorcraft YJ-62) / Obsolete

1972 F100/350 from serial number N40,001, before serial number P40,001.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
D3TZ-19712-A .. A/C Condenser-Use with factory installed integral A/C (Motorcraft YJ-27) / Obsolete

1972 F100/350 from serial number P40,001 / 1973 F100/350 before serial number S20,001.

NOS ONLY in San Jose CA has 1 = 800-667-6659.

I think I agree with Jeff. The original part, even if new, will not perform well with the modern refrigerant; particularly in traffic when little air is passing over it. You need a bigger one, and you have tons of space for it. R12 will soon be a dead letter, as will be the imposters such as "12" and their variants.

I wonder if I will be able to take an ac system out of a newer model truck and make it fit to mine.....If I can get the condenser, dryer, lines, and an aftermarket compressor that works with v belts then maybe I can get it to work with my evap core and still use my "explorer option" box.

Cannot be done, you're stuck with the system you have now.

1973/79 factory installed integral A/C: All the components fit into the dash, there no "hang-on" bezel like the 1968/72 system has. Ditto 1980 and later.

Suggestion: Take the truck to an A/C shop, see if they have a condenser that'll work.

Yep. It was you Bill. Notice you said replaced in 1973. I am assuming back in 2007 you had an OSI slide where Ford stated this. Then later they figured out it is a bad replacement and showed C8TZ-A as being Disco'd in later slides. You and I have seen this zillions of times back in the day. This is ONE of the reasons I always prefered books over the Fische. We could hand write corrections in the books.

Vertical left mounted dryer = FoMoCo factory A/C. Top mounted dryer = Ford dealer installed A/C. Both the factory and Ford dealer air look very similar 1967/72, that's why I asked the question initially.

The original condenser C8TZ-19712-A, was replaced by Ford in 1973, with D3TZ-19712-A (1967/73). 1974/79 uses a condenser/dryer assembly. The hoses will have to be changed to use the 1974/79 condenser D8TZ-19712-A. on the 1967/73 models.

That info was from a 1979 bound paper OSI catalog. A little over a year later, I got much better info...a lot of it.

August 2008, I read in the local newspaper that Pasadena Ford was closing, I needed a Ultra VII viewer so I called the P/M and asked if he had one.

No, he said...what do you want one for? (I thought his 'Bronx honk' sounded familiar). I told him. He said...who is this? I told him.

He said, Bill it's Bob, get your azz over here ASAP, you can have everything!

Everything included over 600 slides, 2 viewers, 60 bound paper and loose leaf catalogs and a lotta other crapola. When all was loaded, my new Fusion's rear bumper was only a few inches from the ground.

1969: P/M at Beverly Hills Ford hired a new driver/trainee for the back counter. He was fresh from the Bronx and I was the back counter guy.

Um, Bill, David is asking about the condenser, not the evaporator.

Um, Eric, an evaporator is basic part number 19860. Where in this thread did I make a reference to an evaporator?
