Check the condition and routing of the emergency brake cables, fuel lines and wiring.
Check the rear axle vent hose, clean or replace as needed.
Check the condition of the cab mount bushings. Note this for a future project if necessary.
Scoot the bed as far back as possible, (I don't know if this is possible) so you can scoot your cab as far back as possible if you replace the bushings...more room for a down pipe.
Consider a 38 gallon rear tank of you have the height to carry the spare under it or don't mind it in in the bed.
Add a 5th wheel or gooseneck hitch is so inclined.

if you put jacks on the frame rails and take the tires off will that give you enough clearance to just slide it right off to give you the room you need?

Thank you, Leo for the list of stuff to do with the bed off. I do plan on installing a 5th wheel hitch so it makes a lot of sense to do this with the bed off. I have the Reese Universal Rails for the hitch. I'll bolt the rails up to the bed with it off the truck but there are brackets also included with the hitch that bolt to the frame (at either side of the rear rail). I'll have to wait until the bed is back on to line the brackets up just right with the holes on the brackets.

Do you think it's overkill to use POR 15 on the bottom of the bed or should I just give it a good cleaning and call it done?

Unless you are taking the painted metal down to BARE metal by sandblasting or painting over RUSTY melt, POR15 is a COMPLETE waste of money. It needs Rough surface to adhere to. Wire wheeled metal, sanded paint, and painted surfaces are NO GOOD for POR15

So all of the fuel lines and electrical lines look fine after removing the bed. I took pictures of what looks like an emergency brake cable housing below. There is a decently large bolt/screw that looks as is if it's now detached from where it was originally supposed to be coming from the housing closest to the front of the truck. Can anyone advise on where to hook this back up if it's a problem? A schematic or a picture of what it should look like would really help a lot.

Thanks again in advance!

Andrew

that bolt is the slack adjuster.
my new scanner will not let let me scan out of the manual, it will only do single page.
the cable from the front of the truck connects to the front side of that "bolt".
it appears the front cable is broken.

here is a view of the parking brake cable and equalizer system

Thank you, it looks like the previous owner used a hack to attach the spring directly to the intermediate cable. From the diagram you sent, it looks like it's supposed to attach to the cable equalizer. I can't tell from the diagram how or if the equalizer is bolted to the frame.

I appreciate the information, I think you've given me enough to get started on figuring it out.

no, the equalizer is what the two rear cables goes into on the outside with the adjuster on the center.
it free floats in air, with the 3 cables holding it from falling to the road.

Ok, thanks. If the spring doesn't attach to the equalizer, any ideas where it attaches?

sorry, i missed that part. the spring attaches to the equalizer on one side, and the rear cable mount on the other side.
the only difference between the way it is now and the way it should be if i remember correctly, it is now in one side, and should be in the middle of the equalizer.
