The trailer hitch on my 1988 F250 prevents me from dropping the gas tank to replace the fuel pump. If I remove the bed will I have access to the fuel pump? (my alternative is removing a welded in hitch and then replacing it, ugh.) Thanks
There is a crossmember towards the front of the tank that might make the lines difficult to remove ( if I remember correctly ) . But you should be able to remove it fairly easy . If the bed bolts come out with no issues .
You can try the bed bolts, some may go easy, but most likely you'll cut a few. Unplug tail light harness (near bumper), detach both filler necks, and lift away. I've dropped tanks & pulled my bed, I prefer lifting the bed (I used two 2x4s the fit between the bed rails and a fork truck with long arms).
do know if your truck is exact same as mine but on my 90 1/2 tone ive done the pumps twice. first time i took the bed off, second time i was able to lift and tilt it to get to both pumps.
While you have the bed out, it would be wise to create a latch so you can access the pump without removing the bed, also, check the condition of everything, look for ruts or anything else that could need being fixed or replaced.
I installed an OEM pump in the rear (out of a parts truck, with a 2010 date tag on it that I pulled in August 2010), and who know what brand in the front (from OReilly). Both have been going strong for some time. Seems the trick is to not run them below 1/4-1/8th tank. Generally I hit 1/4 tank and fill up.
