make sure your spline count on your axle (shafts) matches the centre section (4236 gears) you are installing.

I figured something like this could happen when I read post 1, because some people are unaware that 1973/79 F100/150's could have 28 or 31 spline axle shafts.
Notice the 4236 differential gears. These are specific to either 28 or 31 spline axle shafts.
The pitch of each spline is the same, so a 31 spline axle will be a larger diameter than a 28 spline. Typically a 31 spline would be in a heavier GVW truck, but wouldn't assume that. You need to count the splines on the axles you took out of the truck.
Thanks everyone for the help, I went out and got the axles and housing from the guy I bought the center section off of and now am good to go, they are correct length as well. Just stupid first timer mistakes but that is how I learn I guess
I would advise to have someone that has successfully overhauled a
3rd member before to work with you. As a first timer It would be very
hard to get it set up right the first try.
In a 9in like you have you can take the whole 3rd member to a shop and
have it professionally done. Than you have a guaranty that it is done right
the first time.
Although If all your doing is replacing the seals and bearings I have
gotten by as long as all the shims are still okay once apart and you get
them all back exactly as they came out. And the bearings are the same
manufacture as what was there. So that all the tolerances stay the same.
