I'm working on a '79 1/2 ton 4x4 w/ a 9" rear end. I don't think it's been serviced since it was new. Both axles were stuck but I made a puller that fit in the hub nut access hole. Now the carrier is siezed in the housing. Any suggestions?
Remove the copper washers under the nuts. Use a chisel and cut them, it is the easiest way to remove them. Be sure to replace them when re-assembly. If you've already done that, use a stiff putty knife or a thin, small chisel and a hammer to break the seal between the housing and the carrier. Thread 2 of the nuts just onto the studs to keep the center section from falling out and possibly crushing yourself.
Do not place your jack stands at the ends of the axle tube, place them more to the middle and remove the tires. It may not seem like much, but, the axle can deflect making removing the axles and the center section a bit of a problem.
Do not pry on any lower sections of the center section. If you have to slip something in to pry, do so at the top where a slight scuff or gouge will not effect the gasket surface because no fluid is present. If you pry on the bottom section, use something plastic.
Get a floor jack and a piece of wood and put a very slight upwards pressure on the center section to take the weight of it off the studs. This makes it much easier.
