I have a 1990 f150 5.0l 4x4 with the manual 5 speed tranny. It will not go into 1st or 2nd gear. It doesn't matter if it running or not it still does it. I'm suspecting its a worn shift fork (I know that the 5 speeds eat shift forks). I have heard different things on whether you can pull back the carpet and remove a plate (supposedly) on top of the tranny tunnel to gain access to the top cover and remove it without dropping the tranny. I know that I have to remove the shifter and boot first along with the three bolts that hold the bushings. Is top cover removal without dropping the tranny possible?
To the best of my knowledge yes you should be able to pull the shifter the boot and the carpet and be able to access the trans without dropping it. Not sure how much you can do with it still attached but you can access it.
Yes there is. I removed it on my 1991 F150 yesterday. Just remove the shifter, floor boot, etc. If its 4WD you have to remove the boot on that selector as well. After those are removed you can peel back the carpet and it's a large aluminum "hatch". It has like 8-10 screws holding it down. I want to say they are 10mm hex heads. Once those are removed get a screwdriver or knife and pry it up mine had a black silicon seal around it. Then you'll see your tranny.
