Fist of all thanks to every one looking. I am, at this moment popping my posting cherry.
I just finished putting my 75 HB back together after installing a new clutch and flywheel. While everything was out I decided it would be a good idea to redo all the tranny gaskets and proceeded to pop the top off my 435. I got everything back in the truck and found that my neutral is now a gear and I can't find third... I have the following questions:
1. Can I pull the top and reconfigure the forks by just pulling the tranny tunnel cover from inside the cab or do I need to drop the tranny again?
2. Is it even possible for a laymen, such as myself to be able to tell how to reposition the forks?
3. Short of buying a helmet and registering for the special olympics, does anyone have any other handy tips for a guy in my position?
Thanks again for looking. I frequent this site often and just now registered. It's quite the impressive group of gear-heads.
You can just remove the tunnel cover, & work from above.
But if you feel confident that the selector forks themselves are all engaged correctly in the trans, you can just remove the shifter & flick the selectors into position, working down through the shifter tower with a large screwdriver.
They should all (3x) be in line & central, when looking down into the tower. Then reinsert the shifter tip into the slot created by the selectors.
If you're not sure that the forks are engaged, you will need to remove the trans lid & start from there, with each of the three forks - sometimes quick & easy , sometimes not
Ken, thanks for the tip. Looking down through the top I can see exactly what your talking about. They were all pretty much lined up like you described. I messed with them a little and now I can't get it to shift into any gear. Would you say I'm correct to assume my forks are not in the right spot? I'm going to try and pull the tunnel cover tomorrow or the next day and dig a little deeper. Thanks again for the help.

Probably, but it's unusual that you can't engage any gears at all.
If rocking the truck back & forth a little doesn't help with shifting, then you will have to lift the top & check the forks.
You don't have the forks properly engaged in the correct place in the shift sliders. Although I can't see how you even got the top back on.........it will have to come off. It's always a good idea to shift thru all the gears and check the engagement BEFORE you put it back in the truck.
After you get the top off ....shift all the gears back into neutral....push the reverse slider and gear about half way into engagement.......then do the same for the reverse fork....then the top and forks should slip right in.
