I have a 2002 7,3 with automatic transmission the other day I backed out of my driveway no problem put it in drive realized it would not shift out of 1 brought it home then it wouldn't go into reverse first gear work I can move it fluids were spot on did smell burnt. Shifter now has a bunch of slop in it. Day before drove fine temp good shifted fine dint here anything just stopped working any advice would be great
The first thing to check is to see if the bolts that hold the shift cable to the shift tube are loose or missing. They are on the bottom of the steering column.
Slide under the dash under the steering column. Look up the column and find where the bracket that connects to the shift tube attaches. There are two #30 Torx screws that tend to loosen or fall out.
If they are tight and you still have this problem then I think you need a rebuild.
Thank you I'll go home and try that I'll let you know there are know signs that anything else happened no leaks no clunks no smell was fine day before no check engine light. Oil smells a little burnt could that be cause I drive it in 1st for a little ways to get home 10miles kept it under 2000rpm. The shifter that day had so much play way more then usual but when shifted it still shifts tranny when I look from underneath
You wet right about the two screws under the dash they were almost falling out but unfortunately still no reverse. First and second work when I shift to reverse I can hear the motor change idol it made a small attempt to move when I shifted but nothing
