C4 Linkage stuck

My '77 F100 C4 auto transmission linkage is stuck in Drive. I've disconnected the linkage from the shift lever on the trans, and the shift lever moves freely from Park to 1. But the column shifter still won't budge. Also, the engine won't start with the shift lever in either park or neutral. Just before this happened, the column shifter was very stiff and difficult to change. I suspect something has broken with the shift linkage inside the steering column, but I can't find any information on how to fix this. Any suggestions on what could be wrong and how to fix it will be appreciated!

Here is an exploded diagram of the column from the Ford parts books.
You mention a problem with the NSS. Did the start problem happen at about the same time as the shifting problem?
If it did check the NSS actuator pin (basic p/n 7B097) that is supposed to be clipped to the shift tube. If this broke off (which they are notorious for doing), maybe it fell into the column causing it to jam up somehow.

Yes, the start problem coincided with the shifter problem. I arrived home in the truck, couldn't get it out of drive, so I shut the engine off. It hasn't started since.

However, the actuator pin is still in place, and firmly pressed against what I'm assuming is the NSS. From looking at the diagram you kindly sent, I'm thinking I'll have to pull the steering wheel (and possibly the entire steering column) to find whatever is jamming it. There appear to be several springs inside the workings of the column shifter, perhaps one of them has broken.

Thoughts?

My next suggestion would be to first rule out the most common problem with these trucks, the shift collar (basic p/n 7228). This is the piece just below the steering wheel that the gear shift lever goes into. It is very common for these to break up inside, it's, in my opinion, a poor, weak design. Altough the symptoms you describe don't really fit that scenario you need to rule it out.
To do this you need to remove the steering wheel and turn signal switch. Remove basic p/n 3511 then you can see whether the shift collar is the problem. Once you get this far, assuming you do rule out the shift collar, You can now check where I think the problem might be. The shift tube (p/n 7212). This tube has a small rectangular "block" that is spot welded to the tube. I've seen these break off causing problems.
If you check it and it's okay then the problem would have to be further down in the column. To check will require pulling the column and tearing it apart. If the block is broken off the tube that will require the same thing, pull the column and teardown.
Other than that, I'm kinda out of ideas.
Hope thi helps.
