I have searched the forums and find many instances of the gear selection indicator being slightly askew, and wonderful help as to how to adjust it via the little black thumbwheel. However my problem is slightly more severe I believe.
A little history, my father had Alzhimers sic?? prior to his death, and before I finally had to hide his keys from him he had managed to get the shift lever and indicator mal-aligned. I can only assume he did it with brute strength in a episode of having forgot you have to pull the lever slightly forward to shift down out of park and into gear. Well now it shows Reverse when in Park and the whole range is off a full indication to the right. That I could actually live with, however it will not shift into 1st D and 2 are available but the travel bottoms out at 2, the indicator is indeed at 1 but the tranny isn't.
If you must tell me the entire column has to be replaced, please at least be gentle and kiss me first!
Thanks for any and all help.

Reason: emoticon not working
The plastic bracket that supports black thumb wheel is known to break that could be your problem. if so the Parts house have the bracket.
Thanks for the reply, but the adjuster appears to be fine, even moves the indicator slightly in either direction based on the direction I turn it. Don't see that guitar string thick wire as being the reason the shift lever all the way to the bottom of it's travel only carries the tranny to 2nd gear. No way to get into low/1st.
ok At the base of the column there is a bracket with notches for each position some times the 2 bolts come lose or fall out and causes a problem. Or from what you said it could be bent.

Ok, can you point me to this bracket a little closer? Through dash area, firewall, or true base of column out under hood?
Again, thanks for trying to help me man, I do appreciate it!
kd4gij, thank you very much. You have at least pointed me to the right area! The bad news is the bolts in question are still tight and secure. The entire cast metal piece they screw into however is very sloppy. I m assuming he broke or bent something where it is actually transferring from shift lever to this cast piece, somewhere a little further back up the column.
I really want to fix this as it is the last issue with the truck, and there were quite a few, front & rear window leaks, Front removed cleaned and reset, rear slider replaced) several broken/non operable lights (replaced), door handle broken (replaced) just finished the through the glovebox heater/AC blend door replacement (that was phun) this is the last thing and I will have restored his truck to pristine condition and will garage it to be driven occasionally.
WOW, thank you again! You are a plethora of valuable info! I will drop it down for further inspection, as mine obviously is not broken in two like that, but am wondering if the inner shaft he refers to and the outer piece have been wallowed. You have most assuredly led to the culprit though! Many Thanks!
I have a 1997 f150, steering wheel moves up and down, side to side maybe 3/4 of inch .I am sure it has to do with wife using it as a handle to get in , any fix for this, I am going to find a handle for above the door , would like to get slop out though, sorry to jump in on thread...any ideas?? thanks

First fix that comes to mind is a gym membership. Sorry had to!
I can't offer any help yet, but soon as I get a chance to rip into mine and take a few pics, they may help you.
Todd, I had really hoped to tear into the steering column today but life reared it's ugly head. One of my renters, a Chinese restaurant called this morning with plumbing issues. I spent the better part of the day jetting lines only to have to give up and call in reinforcments. They camera-ed the line only to find a blockage that is going to require the line to be dug up. Will be back on site to meet the backhoe in the morning, really not looking forward to this! I think I would rather change a heater core!
