On my '99 F250 PSD 4x4 the speedometer climbs very smoothly (normal) until I hit 54mph and then it just stops going up. Reviewing other posts I have changed the DSS (differential speed/ABS sensor) and the VSS (tranny speed sensor). Disconnected both batteries for several hours to see if it would clear. Doesn't bounce, peg, go to 0, just won't go past 54mph. No power loss. Tach continues to climb and speed continues to increase. No strange symptoms except this 54mph thing. It is completely repeatable.
All fuses under the dash and hood check out ok.
Anybody seen this before or got any ideas? thanks, Rhett
Thanks for the reply 351 Cleveland C4.
Yes, the ODO tracks fine.
At 54mph I'm running about 1600rpm but I've pushed it up over 80mph and the ODO shows around 2500.
Is the speedometer mechanical with a cable to the tranny?
electric speedometer in anything made after 1992.
the gauge itself is probably bad or has something stopping the needle from going any farther than 54 mph.
the options are to find a different gauge cluster to try, or take yours apart and see if you can find anything that is keeping it from going past 54, like a piece of plastic stopping the needle
Thanks for the replies and direction 351 Cleveland C4 and tjc transport.
I took the gauge cluster out today so I could get a closer look at it and I found a very tiny spider web at the very top of the speedometer that extended just down past the numbers and wouldn't allow the needle to pass. I had to hold the cluster in the sunlight upside down to see it.
What a bizarre problem!
Again, thanks for the direction as I would have spent a lot of troubleshooting time on this one and would have probably eventually sent the cluster out for rebuild!!!

Thanks for reporting back what the problem was and how you "fixed" it.
You know that they want to find a way to make spider silk because it so
very strong for it weight.Just think how small a tow rope could be if it was
made from spider silk. (non-sticky)
One question I was going to ask before the fix. Do the 99 have the diagnostic
routine that you can start by pushing the right button sequence like the newer trucks?
Yahiko, I would definitely buy one of those tow ropes!
I've read some of the posts about diagnostics and button sequences.
In my 99 I only have the one push button stick looking reset for the trip meter. If you know of a specific sequence for me to try I will certainly test it and see......ie, hold the button while turning key on, etc.
I was hoping that someone new of a way.
The only think I can think of would need something like the Ford IDS
tool or something like it to do a gauge sweep test.
Maybe we will get lucky and someone will chime in with an answer.
