I would use the Dex/Merc conventional blend on transmissions that haven't been serviced prior to the new Merc V TSB. Simply because most probably didn't see regular maintenance until after 100k. If you rebuilt, bought rebuilt, or purchased a new transmission, then by all accounts, use Merc V. I thought about switching to synthetic Merc V, but upon closer inspection of the trans fluid and magnet, I chose outdated Merc/Dex to prevent any headaches in the future. So far, my Expedition has done well on Wally world Dex/Merc for nearly 30k. I promise you, that's what's gonna be flushed with in the next month. It has 209,XXX on the odometer, and the transmission fluid stunk when I changed it at 181,XXX.
Let me state...
Subford is correct. My intent isn't to supersede Subford. I listen to his words as if gospel.
I only offer another POV.
Seeing as the Motorcraft Mercon V is recommended at this time by Ford, and the price difference compared to other brands is nominal, I'm going with the Mercon V.
They always told us in school to run fluid not additives
IMHO LV is full of additives to make it compatible with many brands
I run it in applications that call for it but cringe
I am ready to service my trans (E40D) and add the 4X4 trans pan with drain plug and improved rubber gasket used with the pan. I will also be using the 4X4 filter.
My plan is to drop pan and drain converter. Sound correct?
I've have ready countless discussions on which fluid is correct for use in the E40D trans but none included official TSB or Ford documentation. Is there a document that can be shared that indicates which fluid is the correct one to use, seeing as Mercon® is not available (at least not in local auto parts stores)?
The pics below are the two trans fluids sold at my local Wally World. One is Valvoline™ and the other is the Wally brand, Super Tech™. These are the only two I can find that reference being acceptable as a Mercon® replacement. My dipstick says use Mercon®. If these in fact are correct based on Ford documentation, is the Valvoline™ much better than the Wally brand, Super Tech™?
Thanks!
Merc 5 is the answer. I run it in my 96 f150. My local ford mechanic said it actually better for the trans and torque converter. Improved shifting etc etc. down side it’s more expensive but that not a deal breaker for me. I noticed a difference.

Only the early ones had a converter drain I believe
Replace your pan with one like this Hughes I put on mine
Makes it easier next time and holds 14 quarts or something big

which said they were not backwards compatible. I knew there was a newer TSB that addressed that issue so the older fluid did not need to be replaced before using V.
I put Valvoline MAX Life DEX/MERC in the B2 but that is not the “correct” fluid according to TSB 06-14-4. As Mark Kovalsky has stated, MERCON has been superseded by MERCON V…
so who knows what the manufacturer is putting in their “MERCON” labeled product. Especially when it is supposed to be good for a broad range of transmissions.
