I will be changing my transmission fluid and filter this week, I can't find my operator manual so I have no idea how much fluid to buy. The truck is a 99 F-150, 5.4 with 4 speed automatic. Also, which trans fluid is the best, and should I add any of the shift additives avalable? The truck has 92,000 miles. Thanks for the help.

Your dipstick will indicate the type of trans fluid to use (Mercon or Mercon V). I think you probably have the 4R100 trans which requires Mercon. If so, do NOT use Mercon V or any fluid which claims to be both Mercon and Mercon V. Any name brand Mercon is fine, but Motorcraft (if you can get it reasonably) is ideal. Around here, the best deal is Aamco Mercon (made by Mobil) at AutoZone.
The fluids which meet Ford's Mercon requirements are very carefully compounded, and I wouldn't want to second guess those engineers. Additives sometimes have unintended side effects. Mostly they are a waste of money. I wouldn't recommend any additives except possibly if you have a specific problem.
Going from memory, you should have about 12 quarts available if you are able to drain the torque converter (yours probably does have the pipe plug), or about half that if you are just dropping the pan. Perhaps somebody will post (or has posted) a more exact figure.
