I am ready to service my trans (E40D) and add the 4X4 trans pan with drain plug and improved rubber gasket used with the pan. I will also be using the 4X4 filter.
My plan is to drop pan and drain converter. Sound correct?
I've have ready countless discussions on which fluid is correct for use in the E40D trans but none included official TSB or Ford documentation. Is there a document that can be shared that indicates which fluid is the correct one to use, seeing as Mercon® is not available (at least not in local auto parts stores)?
The pics below are the two trans fluids sold at my local Wally World. One is Valvoline™ and the other is the Wally brand, Super Tech™. These are the only two I can find that reference being acceptable as a Mercon® replacement. My dipstick says use Mercon®. If these in fact are correct based on Ford documentation, is the Valvoline™ much better than the Wally brand, Super Tech™?
So, it would not be those pictured? Those pictured state to use where Mercon® is specified but NOT where Mercon®V is specified.
My owner's manual states to use Mercon®. All I can find is Mercon®V besides those that are pictured. I can not find the plain Mercon® only the V stuff.
You can use DEX/MERC in an E4OD, as that is what it was originally specified for. Mercon V supersedes Mercon, and is backwards compatible with older transmissions.
The only reason DEX/MERC is still around, is that the manufacturers no longer have to pay any licensing fees to Ford or GM (hence DEX/MERC instead of Dexron/Mercon).
My local Ford dealer has Motorcraft Mercon®V at $5.17/qt. About $1.00 more per quart that the Valvoline® and about $2.00 more per quart than the Wally brand.
Dex/Merc works perfectly fine, Merc V is better but usually pricier. My 94 owners manual specifies Mercon for the E4OD. Same when I had my 95 F150, which actually had an E4OD in it (94 is a stick; see sig).
