NOT including mustang blocks, what year did ford start making their windsor blocks roller ready? I know they were still using flat tappet up through 93? Correct me if I'm wrong but I'm wanting to build a roller cam 302 for an 83 f150 4x4 and I'd like to know how far back before 1994 the blocks were machined to accept the roller assembly
Officially 5.0 blocks cast from 1987 on were roller ready but it was '94 before the 5.8 block followed suit.... hint hint.. nudge nudge.
Conanski, I'm glad you responded since you know these trucks pretty well! 94 and newer blocks are hard to find around here for some odd reason but the older ones are in an abundance.
The first roller 302 blocks were cast for the 1985 model year. In 1986, the casting was improved with the addition of an extra 4 pounds of iron in the decks and bottoms of the bores. There were no flat tappet blocks cast after 1985 that I know of. Now all that said, I have run across one roller 302 block that had incompletely formed lifter valley bolt bosses for the spyder hold down bolts. That block was sent to the pickup truck line where it was used with a flat tappet cam. Some of the pickup/van 302 blocks that were equipped with flat tappet cams did not have the hold down bolt holes drilled and tapped, so if you have one like this, you will need to drill and tap the holes. Just be advised that under the bosses lay the cam bearings, drilling and/or tapping the holes too deep with the cam bearings in place will result in damage to the bearings, as will using bolts that are too long.
I have 2 good blocks with one being a 1980 model and a 1983 model... Baddad, that was the 302 block only right?
If those two are 302 blocks, I would strongly recommend you find something other than an 80-84 302 block, those are the weak sisters when it comes to 302 blocks. Real lightweights in terms of iron content. They weight in a 120 lbs, vs 136 for the 68-79 blocks and 126 for the 86-2001 roller blocks.
not to sure if throwing any more money in this build is the way to go , at some point I need to stop and build this up.
if i had my way (a new pile of money) the rollers and cam kit would go on , with AFR Renegade 165 heads.
I do think a very potent 351w truck could be built with low rpm torque and still rev high.
next time around the 351w block E9ae the one I hydro locked will get much better parts and a lot more time to match them.
