what is the difference? im trying to stroke it out to a 347 pushing out 500+hp...will roller vs a non roller block prevent that? leave feedback...thanks
The general block is the same - but the roller lifters are larger - so the bores in the block are larger to accomodate that. A non-roller block can still be made to use roller lifters, my 393 is a non-roller block running roller lifters and a roller cam.
I suggest you make sure you get a good 347 kit (there are bad ones out there) so that you ensure a good quality build. You also might want to look into an aftermarket block depending on where you're going to take this thing. It's my understanding that around 600hp 302's will start to wanna split - some handle more than others - so do some research and come up with a safe limit to push a normal 302 block...
I have always been under the impression that the lifter bores were/are the same roller vs non-roller). The difference is the block; if the lifter valley is taped for a spider, then a Ford roller assmebly (spider, lifters, dogbones and roller cam) could be installed. As far as I know, Ford has used the same size lifter bore, on a windsor block, since 1967...or so. If it's a pre-roller block then link-bar roller lifters are needed, and those are rather pricy.
Either way, any "rollerizing" you do will help make/support more power, however, 500hp is about the limit for a 302 block...just in case you're looking for longevity.
We have successfully used the late model roller blocks in our circle track applications. These are 347's that make about 525-550 HP with flat tappet and close to 575-600 with roller. We always install new 4-bolt steel splayed main caps. This really ties the block together, and the outer bolts attach out into the pan rail area. The late model roller block have more material in the main web area.
Matt, I might be wrong about that now that you mention it. I just took the 351 out of my 89 and looking at it it looked like a larger diameter bore than my non-roller 393...maybe I am not looking at it right. I'm not sure if my 89 is a roller block (doesn't have a roller cam) or not...

The only reason I mention this is because, some of the early GEN 1 L's had non- roller blocks. These blocks could be drilled and tapped to accomodate a spider lifter and dogbones from a roller 302. I looked up some lifters from Summit and some of them range from 1967 to 2001. Post back if you find something different, because that would be some very useful info.
