Oil Consumption

In another post I mentioned about my engine using 4 qts of Delo400 10w-30 over the course of 3200 miles. Now I get that some will say that is within spec….and I’d agree. But IT BOTHERS ME!

When I had my ’96 I noticed it drinkin’ the dead dinos at about 155k miles, and a simple injector o-ring replacement fixed it. People in other forums have mentioned that I may have nicked an o-ring when I installed these 160/30’s….possible, but I don’t think so. As I explained to Steve, Rich and Cody, I had started chasing the oil consumption on the ’01 at about 150k (as I had done on the ’96). The new o-rings did not solve the issue, and two falls ago I had switched to Rotella T6 (5w-40) and in a 5k OCI I had served up 7 make-up qts.

Forward to the recent past….new 160/30’s installed by me. Fresh 10w-30 Delo as it was still winter here. Then I topped it off before the trip west…maybe 1qt to get to the top of the fill line. Drive to Kittitas, 1550 miles, let it drain down for a day….pull the stick, oil level bottom of the hashed area. Pour in 2qts and back to the top of the hashed area. Drive home….down 2qts again.

As some may recall, I did a compression test after the injector install….high of 380, low of 365. Flip the filler cap over at idle…steamy but it will not blow off.

So, where should I look next? Is it possible that a turbo shaft seal (exhaust) can leak 2qts and given the sustained 2200 rpm drive, just consume that and not wet the tailpipe? Or could it be the compressor side turbo shaft seal? I do seem to have what I believe to be excess oil in the CAC piping.

Or could it be a valve stem seal issue?

Thoughts welcomed.

I don't know much about oil loss but I will share my personal experience with my 7.3. If it keep the oil topped off to the FULL level it uses oil if I don't top it off it will drop until it is about half way between the ADD and FULL marks and stay there without dropping. Now I just keep an eye on it if it ever gets to the add mark I will add oil but I don't think that will happen. Maybe it will stop dropping if you stop adding.

Not that I have anything more to add other than another data point but I run T6 5w-40 and I lose a fraction of a quart over a 5000+ mile interval which spans spring to spring.

Which reminds me it is oil change weekend this weekend.....

Stinky doesn't use oil between oil changes... at all. The engine bay is clean, the valley is a desert, and the only drips on the driveway are from when I slop during maintenance. I'm not saying this is what everybody should expect, but it's a reasonable goal to shoot for. I'd look at rebuilding the turbo. When you pull it, this is also the time to inspect your EBPV.

I do have the a smallish leak at the dip stick flange. Side of the pan gets damp. If I ever get a stretch of decent weather and time, I have the fuel bowl reseal o-ring kit that I will install at the same time I install the van turbo (that I had Dieselsite machine for a 66mm compressor wheel) and the bellowed uppies. The van turbo has no wastegate nor EBPV, and I have a delete ped for that was well.

Oh, and the rear brakes and the power steering lines need to be replaced.

Just to be clear, when I say a fraction.....I don't mean 2/3 of a quart over the interval, I mean we'd be hard pressed to find any missing from when I filled up.

Dan V,

I'm right there with you, Exact same situation except my compression numbers were all ~ 415 PSI.

I've been chasing it for months now.

Work that has been done:

Rebuilt Turbo
Deleted EBPV
Replaced IPR
Replaced HPOP
Replaced ICP

The truck has no leaks, no oil in the down tube/tail pipe, no oil in Turbo housing. I have a steam out the filler tube on passenger side valve cover, but the cap doesn't blow off.

I've run T6 and it dropped 5 qts, I've been running Delo 400 Syn and it's dropped 2 qts in 2K miles.

I'm about to perform another oil change and go back to Dino Rotella. I know my #8 injector needs to be replaced so I'm saving to change out all 8 sticks.

I'm happy to talk through all of the chasing I've done, but my Knees hurt from being on top of the truck looking for an oil leak. It doesn't exist.

There are several on here who are in the same boat you are, I have an entire thread going through this... https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...ittle-oil.html

I'm happy to work with you and see if we can fix our problems...
