Eratic Oil Usage
Have a 2002 F-550 diesel. It only has 95k miles on it and have owned it for about 5 years now. When first purchased the truck had local dealer change all fluids to get a baseline starting point. I'm burning about 1 gallon every 1000 miles but only seems to burn the oil when not working the engine hard. If travel 500 miles round trip with a 30' goose neck with 10k+ load on it will not use any oil (checked prior to leaving and upon return). Then if use for local runs into town with no trailer or load my oil usage explodes. I only drive it about 1000 miles a year and change the oil every 2k miles. There are no major oil leaks puddles etc. Any idea what causes this type of usage, it runs great. Had a farm tractor in the late 70's that would burn 2 qts a day when doing light work and none if plowing. I'm not really too concerned about the usage but would like to understand why....

Somebody else should post up but maybe when working hard the turbo seal rings seal up. Usually it is turbo related when it burns that kind of oil. Thats what I've been lead to believe from reading on here.
