I am looking to upgrade my ignition from points to electronic.....After alot of searching on this site it seems that this subject has gotten beat to death and some of the threads have gotten a little heated. I am hoping this doesnt happen as those threads were from years ago.
I have been told that the pertronix seems to be the easiest way to go. I have thought about finding a DSII distributor and box but not sure which other wiring I would have to get as well. I will not get an HEI distributor just cause I dont I want to keep the FORD stock look.
If you have installed the pertronix please describe in detail how you did it and its performance, also any advice about going to the DSII is welcomed as well.
I think points sometimes get a bad rep unfairly because of worn out distributors or other problems. it won't run right with worn parts) tho a Pertronix will help in that instance because they are a bit forgiving of mechanical wear.
The remedy is still a good distributor itself, mostly.... run a 30 amp generator, 40k volt Flamethrower coil, Pertronix I ; deleted resistor wire and a reman Motorcraft. dizzy. Works great for 10 years. No adjustment is nice, too.
These older trucks really like a 12v hot coil and good battery, good solid grounds and open the plug gap to .045, idle will improve.
I have run points and HEI units as well. The HEI was nice, but it was odd and required a few changes to make it fit. The pertronix does just as well if not better, and uses all stock components.
