Hi guys. Just a quick question. I am rebuilding my C6 and putting in a B&M shift kit with a TCI High stall at the same time. Do any of you use an additive along with the Mercon V fluid for a break in? John.

No you do not need ANY additives when it comes to Mercon V. They'll likely just break down under the high heat you're going to be producing.
Heat is going to be your main concern... so make sure you get a big enough transmission cooler and install it properly (Transmission -> Radiator -> Cooler -> Transmission).

Type F fluid is the old way of doing things and almost always requires additives to work properly. Mercon V doesn't. Out with the old, in with the new.
Type f isn't the old way of doing things and there aren't any additives required. Racers all over the country still prefer type even the Chevy guys. All in what u know, and what I know is ford recommended type f for the c6 and it has worked for decades. Even firms up shifts. I would suggest the mercon for any manual transmissions.
Type F fluid being used primarily in older vehicles, and Mercon being introduced and use since 87.... Yes... Type F fluid IS the old way of doing things.
You can't deny that Type F is old and outdated compared to Mercon, or even Mercon V.
There's something to be said about what "should" be used in older style transmissions... But the bottom line is Type F is old, Mercon V is new. Period.

Are you sure they recommended type F for decades? In recent decades, Mercon was used in C6's.
Take a look at this article I pulled up from another forum.
Now... Some people may read the warnings and think my statement gets thrown out the window... But that's not the case. All of the warnings are to not use Mercon in a Type F-based transmission or Mercon V in a Mercon-based transmission is based on the fluid being changed, and not the entire transmission being:
Cleaned,
Inspected; and
Rebuilt
If the transmission is going to get a full rebuild, EVEN with stock parts, there's definitely a chance to use a newer, and better fluid that has greater shear resistance and better flow characteristics at high temperatures.
Why would someone like Ken Collin, a retired Ford Technician, publish videos and information saying to use Mercon V instead of Type F or the original Mercon? It's because it's better than the older fluids...
If Type F fluid was so high and mighty, even in race transmission, why would Ford switch to using Mercon V in ALL of their vehicles since 2007? Because it's better than what they had before.
Thanks Guys. I have Ken Collins DVD on the C6 AND the 9" I guess I missed the part about the mercon V. Yes this is being rebuilt. I to have read all kinds of posts and points of views and etc. The only part I needed to know was about an additive in a rebuilt tranny. Thanks Aaron and Gigger for setting me straight. Y'all have a great Humpday. John.
