C6 Fluid Requirements
On a trip a couple weeks ago I found I had a tranny leak. It was just a loose hose clamp where the cooler line had been spliced. I tightened it up, added a bottle of Lucas tranny additive, and a half qt of Chevron MD3 not realizing that Ford had a special fluid for the C6. Is there a difference between the MD3 and the CJ ? One site I saw says it can be replaced with Mercron or Mercron V, another says Mercron V must never be used in pre-97 vehicles. SO what are folks running out in the real world ??? Any thoughts ??

I thought ford only ran mercon IV in the C-6 from the factory since the late 70's. There was some service bulittens (SP?) that sited never to mix mercon IV with Mercon V in a tranny that it would cause some slippage issue with the transmission, but that seemed to be aimed at the electronically controlled trannies. When I rebuilt my C-6 I used type F as the fluid per the recommendation of the rebuild kit. I just never found out what the difference was in all the fluids except that type F is from petro and the others are synthetics, but not positive on that statement.
