fWT: 184*, EOT: 190*

15 mile run @60-65 mph (+ couple of 10 second WOTs).
Ambient *=76.

ScanGauge II reads as in Title.

Early (02/13) 2003 6.0L, 86000 mi, F350 Lariat CCLB DRW (tow vehicle for 15k, 38' 5thWheel), no performance enhancing mods yet.

Have had her for 4 yrs now, finally taking over most maintenance myself.
Changed Tranny & Oil (+ OEM/Racor filters) and both fuel filters.
Mercon SP & Rotella T 15-40.

Next up: Coolant flush/replacing Ford Gold with cat ec-1 ELC red. Then XDP Coolant filter kit. (after 1000 mile journey back to my house in IN - departing FL in 3 days - so no time to do it now).

So much for foreplay --- my ??? --- Doesn't it appear that T-stat is stuck open, and needs replaced with a new 191* (RT-1169) ???

Looks like the tstat is getting weak. If your flushing the coolant, you might as well change it.

Oil cooler looks good.

Do a distilled flush, no chemicals, top off with ELC and new tstat and you're set.

You can replace the thermostat, but it's easy to spend money needlessly chasing a problem that 5 years ago, before computer generated digital readouts, you wouldn't have known you had. And it's not actually a problem. The engine doesn't care, and the 6 degrees difference between 184 and 190 is within the error range of the sensor.

Your delta looks excellent, btw.

PCM wants to see 185+ to go into full closed loop operation. Anything below 185 is wasting fuel.

I've changed mine several times with MotorCraft and aftermarket. They all seem to hang at 190-194 when new and slip down to 180ish after awhile, some even lower. MotorCraft has lasted the longest for me. It may be just me but I think my truck runs better at 190° than 180° and fuel mileage definitely goes up a little. As MC5C says above, we're measuring the dynamics of a melting ball of wax and a spring with an un calibrated device, but I do think hotter is better.

My motorcraft t-stat has hung in there about 18 months.

It seems all makes of t-stats these days suck. My Ranger went thru them like candy, as did my 74 F100.

Josh, Granted my 05 is only at app. 59,000 miles but it runs consistantly between 198 and 204 ECT regardless of the S. Ca. Ambients on the original t-stat.

Tx, all 4 of you, for your replies/advice.
I figured a new t-stat during coolant flush was in order.

Glad Josh suggested a non-chemical flush, as I was leaning toward using Restore (that might have been Bad News for my functioning oil cooler).
Any thoughts on using Simple Green ????

My forum lurking concludes the PSD desires 190*-200* for better fuel burn (mpg).
I Have been getting 9.5 towing & 17 no-tow. At today's diesel prices, would love to see 12 - & - 18. Hopefully, being more attentive to the "vital signs" of the engine (via ScanGauge II), will help.

I need economical/reliability performance, not rolling coal - rubber burning POWER. However ...........
I sure enjoy the whine/roar of a straight-piped 2003.

Would the MBRP 4" Turbo Back (S6206409, 3.5" dp) w/cat delete (& their muffler) into a 6"x12" tip let me hear that C-130 Hercules sound AND increase my mileage ??
That's my next plan, unless informed people advise against !!!

Another upgrade: Ultra Econ tune to my FICM (which is rock solid at 48.0-48.5). Pros/Cons ???

(looking to keep upgrade cost under $1500, so no EGR delete, studs, injectors, head gaskets, etc.)

Once ambient hits 60+ I see 192-194 for the most part. When the temps dropped below 0 I would see the ECT dip down to 187-188 sitting at a long stoplight etc. once moving the ECT picked back up to 190.

At those temps it took quite a bit to see above 190, but the t-stat still held well.

Pretty sure the t-stat was OEM when I replaced it at 100,000 miles.
