I just purchased a 2005 Excursion Limited 4X4 6.0L with 99,000 miles on it. Great low miles, but due to it being a 6.0 I did a ton of research on it to see what the common issues are. I’ve learned where one of those issues is the standpipes and dummy plugs. I feel that mine are okay as of now, but for how cheap they are to replace, I am thinking about replacing them just to be safe on a weekend where I have a day to kill so I can do it myself and save some money.
So my question is, if I have to spend all day tearing the valve covers off and putting them back on. What else should I replace while I am in there? In everyone’s opinion, what else should I do? I’ve read about a few other sensors in there that can go bad as well. I thought about doing those, but I don’t want to miss anything and since it’s not an issue right now, I’m just going to start buying one part every payday until I have everything. I figure several minds are better than one. Thanks for the suggestions.
I have 236k and have never done it. Start with fluids first. Quality oil, coolant flush, trans flush + pan + filter upgrade, fuel filters. Make sure all filters are OEM and have the correct caps. Assume the previous owner used the worst possible fluids, and change them ASAP, I don't care what he told you, what records he provided, etc. Just do it, and get in the habit of doing it. I prefer mobile delvac 0w-40 for oil, penzoil maxilfe full synthetic LV but do your research, coolant make sure you get a silicate free ELC coolant. And all motorcraft filters. The 6.4 trans and filter upgrade are $200 for the pair, $150 if you find deals.
That will easily set you back $500+. Bottom line is, the 6.0 is not a stingy vehicle. Take care of it, and it'll take care of you. Neglect it, and you'll spend thousands doing your own repairs, more if you have a shop do it. Fluids/filters are always a first priority, it's all I've done for 236k miles, and the one time I neglected a coolant change to the proper coolant, it bit me hard. My oil cooler clogged and blew, dumped coolant into my oil, and had massive labor in disassembly and assembly.
Good advice on the fluids. I have thought of this as well. The dealership changed he oil when I purchased it. I added some Archoil to it, but I am going to put 3K miles on it before changing it again to full synthetic with more oil additive. I did also plan on taking it to Ford and having he coolant system flushed well. Thanks for the info. It makes me feel better knowing that someone who takes care of their truck has so many miles on it.
