I have three old 1973-1975 F100-F150 trucks. The lights on the 1975, F-150 went out and I have been trying to change out the light switch. I read a lot about how to remove the switch; but, some of the directions don't jive. Can anyone tell me how to remove that light switch?
I've moved your post out of the other thread and into its own thread in the 1973 - 1979 F-100 & Larger F-Series Truck forum. Hopefully you'll get some answers this way.
There is a small button on top of the switch that you depress. Push the button and pull out on the **** to remove the ****, then there is a nut that retains the switch in the dash.
Also before replacing the headlight switch I would suspect the dimmer switch, it is foot activated- I would stomp (for lack of a better word) on the switch several times switching between high and low beam and see if the lights start working
Thanks to both of you guys. I've already seen the light switch picture before when I was originally searching; but, I'm not sure I understand because there is no nut or anything showing on the dash. I found the little push clip on top of the switch and I believe that will release the pull **** and shaft which I haven't done as yet. Will try that tomorrow. I will also try the dimmer switch as well.
The nut for the headlight switch is under the dash bezel do you have to take the plastic dash surround off first but to do that you have to release the headlight **** and pull the shaft out first, once you do you'll see the dome shaped headlight switch nut
When you say the lights are out, are you just referring to the high/low beams, or something else (dash lights, parking lights, etc)?
It's much easier to troubleshoot this problem with a multimeter or test light. You're going through all this trouble to replace the headlight switch, but you haven't done anything to prove that it's actually the culprit. For all you know, this could be a wiring problem out at the core support and all your efforts behind the dash are for not. In all reality, the headlight switch itself is actually seldom the problem.
Some quick measurements at the pigtail that connects to the dimmer switch will point you in the right direction if you're interested. I realize that's not what you asked.

That's correct. You pull the shaft out and remove the plastic instrument cluster bezel. This will allow access to the nut that holds the switch to the metal dash panel.
This is the nut that needs to be removed.
When its installed, the ****'s shaft goes through the nut.
