Threads of spark plug broke off in head

My boss brought me a expidition that just came back from ford after getting the plugs changed. They had one plug break the threads off in the head. Service manager quoted my boss 5000 to fix it because he said it would need a new head. Has anybody had experience with this issue and what can be done? I plan on pulling the head off since it is the back hole on the passenger side.

Uh, they broke it, they can fix it. $5,000 for a spark plug? Sure!

Thanks for all your help Ted, unfortunately When you buy a used vehicle and have problems like this you have to pay the price. I won't charge him 5000. The service manager said he has only seen one other case like this so apparently it is rare. And the other thing is that they are not liable because they don't preform the maintenance on the vehicle.

I believe its a 05( year don't matter) its a three valve head design. 5.4L since its in the modular block section of this forum. Anybody that had any common sense would know that a two valve head design don't break plugs off( they tend to blow em out of the hole once in a while)

Anybody that had any common sense would also know that if you broke off a plug in a 3V modular, you'd get the Lisle (or equal) extraction tool kit and remove the broken plug.

I have a kit from snapon to put them in, but they are different thread size then the three valve heads. They are made for the older 5.4L 2valve design. And they work damn good when the plug blows out of the hole. I am looking for one for the three valve head, but haven't had any luck

Timesert makes a separate tool kit for the 3V heads with the larger holes (16 mm vs 14 mm).

Well after i got the head off i was able to knock the porcelain out from the bottom( this is all that was stopping me from getting it out). I had to cut down a square style extractor(couldn't find one that didn't go to deep), I knocked it in broken threads of the plug. After a hard tug the broken plug came out. Used my extractor to get the rest of the plug out. Now just got to put it back together.
