Sorry to hear it. Please do not judge all folks by this one "encounter".

I loaned a spare FICM to a forum member a while back. It came back with a shorted out power supply board.

Ed helped me out some on the repair cost. Took me some time to get over that one.

Please call these people out so others don't have the same encounters with them

Was he new or a long time member? Could it be that he in some kind of trouble, health, the law... that he couldn't be on the forum... Or he just a dirt bag...

Sorry to hear that, this forum are one of the kind, I never seen any forum as helpful as this forum and the people here are willing to help each other. A few bad apples always ruin the helpfulness of the member here.

with 714 244 2300 being the front desk of a fortune 500
company.

i pulled up in front of the upscale fashion island office building,
and called her number, and she let it go to voice mail, recognizing
my number.

i left a message that she owed me $500, i was sitting in front
of the building waiting for it, and i was going to start at
714 244 2300, and leave a detailed message at every number
about this debt she was deadbeating me out of, until she brought
out the money, in cash. (while earning $190k a year, she constantly
bounced checks. not trustworthy.)

i waited five minutes, then called the first number, the front desk
at -2300, and left a message for her.

i made it to about -2308 before she made it out of the building,
with cash.

i'm not shy. if i had this persons contact information, i'd probably
send them some phone calls asking them to return the missing part.
and if 288 of us did the same thing.......

High maintenance!? $190K a year and still don't have enough in the bank to write checks. She should lent you money instead..

You guys help so many folks it was bound to happen eventually. Even though it sux when other people burn bridges you built, don't let it spoil your attitude! Most people are good folks and this person may not have "planned" to do this, maybe some life stuff happened to them or (most likely) they are just irresponsible. I can't count the stuff I've "lost" in a similar fashion over the years. A lot of times I lost track of who borrowed what.

If you're going to keep loaning stuff, take a quick picture of borrower with the item. Most people don't mind and you can scroll through your photo album and see who, what, when at a glance. Also, make sure you have their contact info at the same time. This lets them know you're keeping track.

It is possible to visit this persons profile page and see if they are signing on. It will show the last date and time on their "stats" tab and update every time they sign on.

I guess there is also the possibility that some life event has happened to this person that put the IPR to the back of their mind, a tragedy of some sort perhaps.

Wow,, quite the response on this one,,, I cant remember the guys name that borrowed it,,, heck I cant even remember what he looks like. Hopefully there are understandable circumstances that caused him to disappear,, I just remember him mentioning he is a member on here. It still feels good to help out people, but stuff like this will change my "check out" policy on borrowed items. Thank god it wasnt my set of crank tools or something thats harder to replenish. I have a hard time remembering everyones name that comes here. lol

I keep a white board next to the tool box. Guys want to borrow a tool or item there name, ph# goes on the board & date borrowed.
Plus I only lend out to friends but things still stay away from home to long.

Something to try if you lend parts & pieces to strangers.

I take something in collateral. More because I forget what I loaned out than people not bringing things back.
