IP timing off?

Hoping someone can help me out with this. After putting my 7.3 IDI turbo diesel heads and IP back on, I've noticed my fuel return lines are leaking after new seals, and a hard start. If my IP timing is way off, could this increase the pressure in the fuel system enough to cause these symptoms? I don't have access to a ferret timer or fuel pressure gauge, so I'm wondering if there is a way to safely experiment with the timing.

if your ip is straight up with timing lines matched, your not off enough to cause issues.worse case would be lower than possibly achieved performance and economy and perhaps a little excessive smoke.without a timing meter it would be best to leave it alone.
if your caps are leaking,it could be because you re-used old parts, used a poor quality new kit, didn't fully seat the caps,or you didn't lube the rings enough when installing and you nicked them.

Thanks!

Yea, I used the o-rings that came with the kit and the looked a tad narrow. I did use a light coat of lubricant and the caps slipped on real nicely. I'm wondering about the hard start. I've run it a couple of miles after priming the system, and I would have thought that would have been enough to clear the air out of the system. Maybe still some in the fuel filter. Thanks again!

What timing marks do you have lined up. The latter truck do not have a 12 o clock mark on the housing. You kinda just have to wing it. It will start and run but will be retarded. There should be an additional mark at 10 oclock that was put there when they timed the truck at the factory My pump has a mark at both spots but the housing does not. ( this is according to the international manual ) I found that at 9 degrees BTDC I'm a sliver below that mark.

Makes sense.

That really makes sense, because mine only had a timing mark on the pump also. So I wrote my own mark on the cover ov the gear housing with a sharpee before I tried a couple of minor adjustments. I noticed that the pin inside the front cover of the housing was already at the 12 o'clock position so I just marked the teeth on the gears to make sure I matched them back up. I wonder if I may have been off by a tooth.
