My rule of thumb when purchasing a new vehicle is 20% off MSRP is the about the best you are going to do. Depending on the vehicle and the popularity. In my are right now Subaru Foresters are hot and dealers are getting above MSRP. You should have no problem getting a good deal on a new 2014 SD as the new ones are about to come out and dealers want to clear old inventory.
Just checked google for Houston dealers and they all are show super good prices compared to the one up here in Michigan. Most likely be well worth the trip if I can't get the dealers here to move on the price.
When I purchased my 2012 truck here in California I used a price from a dealer in Idaho and the dealer here matched their price. I have only run in to one instance where a dealer refused to match another dealer's price and that was 20 years ago.
I forget my exact numbers and don't have access to the paperwork right now, but I know I was able to get them down $10-12K on my '13 DRW Lariat last June same day, walking in off the street with no prior relationship. Also got them to throw in some floor mats, free maintenance and a hat. I NEEDED a new truck, but am really good at letting them know that I don't need THEIR new truck. My favorite method is the smart phone... Pull up other deals and show it to them, then remind them that you live near by and will be giving them your business in the future for maintenance, new vehicles, accessories, etc... (even if you're going to do it all yourself). Just my 2 cents that no one asked for.
