My CTS says 66 percent full on p.i.d.When I go into the ford splash screen it says under 1/2.Does the cts have more accurate info then splash screen? Im thinking not.My p.i.d. Info on cts went from 100 percent to 66 percent. So really I just want to know if ill fit the entire 2.5 gls in tank?Or should I wait till the mileage countdown come on?
You DEF tank only has three sensors in it. Basically Full, Half Full and 800 miles to empty. So regardless of what display you look at ( Commend Center or Edge CTS) it can only display what the sensors in the tank are reading. Regardless of how the display words or shows the results.
I personally hate to have to clear the message saying I'm at 800 miles ( or less) to empty. So I always fill mine before I get that low. In the winter with freezing temps, I wait a little longer when I notice I'm under 1/2 tank so that a 2.5 gallon jug doesn't over fill and freeze in the filler tube.
I guess what I'm saying is that I rarely put in two jugs at any time. One jug and just do it on a more frequent schedule.
I learned early on it depends how long it's been at under half full.
The second time I filled the tank it reported under half but I over filled it (made a mess).
It must had recently changed to under half and I just happened to run a system report.
That's when I learned to let it stay at under half for awhile and I was able to put in 2.5 gallons.
Now I just wait for the MTE countdown and refill when I get tired of answering the message all of the time.
At 200 MTE, I can squeeze in 5 gallons in the summer months because it's AL and there's no chance we'll have a freeze.
I use the filler tube and even when it all doesn't fit in I still don't spill that much... Are you filling it with a funnel?
Granted the 2.5 gal jugs have punch outs for air to get in which of course means the whole 2.5 needs to fit or I guess it could go bad? Since I only use 1 gal. jugs that I fill up when I top the truck off at the bulk DEF pumps, I haven't had that problem. In fact, a trucker threw out the whole 2.5 jug with the filler tube attached, which is how I got the filler tube the first time, since the dealer forgot to give me one when he gave me the jugs. This was right after I got the truck and I still have the filler tube....
I don't like countdowns to idle either so I keep mine topped off. After almost 4 years no issues.
I generally start thinking about stopping by the dealer's and buying a 2 1/2 gal jug when I see the under 1/2 message. By the time I remember to stop a full jug will fit. The one time I had a jug in the garage and filled the tank the same day I saw the message it would not take the last 1/2 gallon or so.

I don't have a Ford filler tube.
The early bluedef jugs didn't have an air inlet so I would make my own in the jug.
I didn't use a funnel but those bluedef jug tubes allow overfilling, which is how I made the mess.
All fills since then have been issue free, I've lost count at this point.
I've been using Peak DEF for about 4 years. I've learned to listen carefully to the sound to determine when it's full.
That is the key. I typically fill in my garage where I can hear.
That spill was outside and neighbor was mowing his yard, I didn't hear anything until it was too late.
