First off, I have a 2001 Expedition Eddie Bauer Edition with the 5.4 and it has the towing package, if needed to be know. It was rebuilt about six months ago. Since we got it back, it shifts fine until your going about 40MPH running 2500-3000RPM for a minute, then it will either shift to the next gear and run fine, or loose all pull power, as if it was pushed into neutral. You rev it up a couple of times and it will catch and shifts. It does one or the other every day, but only when the transmission is cold. I will check to see what gear switch it does it on in the morning. When it does it, the OD light on the gear selector stick starts flashing. Pulled codes and got P0171, P0174, P0782, P1127, P1780. Please help me, just got the truck from my parents for college and I need it running before I leave. Thanks in advance!!!!!!!!!!
The p0171 and p0174 codes are lean codes for both sides of the engine, when they set together it usually means that there is a vacuum leak somewhere allowing unmetered air to enter the system, or a bad MAF sensor that is not reading air entering the engine properly. I find vacuum leaks at the PVC hose, intake gaskets, vacuum lines, and EGR valve.
The p1127 code can set because of the air leak as well or catalytic converter problems.
The p1780 code can set because the OD switch was not cycled during the self test or the switch itself or wiring has failed.
The p0782 code is a 2-3 shift error code, this one could be a killer, it means the computer did not see the right gear ratio when shifting into 3rd. It could be a solenoid block (unlikely) or there could be damage to the frictions or seals inside the transmission. Make sure the fluid level is correct, engine running on level ground in park when warm.
There is a chance that the MLPS switch could be faulty, the best way to catch it is to watch it in the data stream of a good scanner. This switch tells the computer what gear you have selected, so if you are in drive the switch may tell the computer for a moment you selected a lower gear and the transmission will downshift. This is usually a hot problem FYI.
