I have been running Walmart Supertech DEF for four or five years and haven't had any trouble. Maybe the guy that had trouble got some from a bad run. This tells you to keep your receipts and don't buy it to far in advance.

Just glad my John Deere equipment doesn't use DEF- I bought it all before the larger equipment started requiring it.

I'm assuming johndeerefarmer has equipment quite a bit larger than a lawn and garden "tractor" if you wanna call em that.

I was sure he'd catch that (and maybe even crack a smile) but was equally certain that many of y'all wouldn't recognize the equipment. This pic is about three years old, both the truck and 5th are now gone (replaced).

Yep, I caught it.;

I have a 105 hp tractor built in the Mannheim factory, a 85 hp track loader and 70 hp skid steer. The tractor is a '13 model so missed having to have DEF but it does regen on occasion. The 85 hp compact track loader is the same. . The 70 hp skid steer is just a year old but no DEF either. The 25-75hp engines have less stringent emissions standards to meet (though still Tier 4) so they can get away without using DEF

So I guess I shouldn't challenged you to a tractor pull? Now do they have cup holders?
Rules are - without pics they aren't real.

Cupholder, radio, heat and air are standard equipment in all of my machinery. The skidsteer and snow plow are at my Colorado place. It has a heated seat.

It is not so much a contamination issue as just DEF has a very short shelf life! They date code the boxes and jugs so to make sure it’s not over 60 days old I highly recommend checking before buying which ever brand you choose! One guy decided to go with Blue Def over Walmart store brand and didn’t know about shelf life and had DEF system problems shortly after fill up due to old DEF that had been sitting on the shelf too long!!

that’s why I personally like truck stop pumps, but I don’t have any local to me anymore so I buy whatever’s on sale and try not to worry too much about dates and stuff

I'm going to start checking now but found this online. From https://cumminsfiltration.com/sites/...es/MB10033.pdf

Q. What is the shelf life of DEF?

A. The shelf life of DEF is a function of ambient storage temperature. DEF will degrade over time depending on temperature and exposure to sun light. Expectations for shelf life as defined by ISO Spec 22241-3 are the minimum expectations for shelf life when stored at constant temperatures. If stored between 10 and 90 deg F, shelf life will easily be one year. If the maximum temperature does not exceed approximately 75 deg F for an extended period of time, the shelf life will be two years.

Q. How can I determine when the DEF I have purchased was manufactured?

A. All DEF packages will have a date code located somewhere on the product. The date code will allow you determine the date the DEF was made. 1 gallon containers will have a laser code imprinted on the bottle. 2.5 and 5 gallon containers have a small date code label applied to the bottle. Drum and totes will have a label applied to either the top or side of the product. The first digit of the date code represents the DEF batch number and the next 6 digits reflect the date that the batch was filled. Date Code Imprint Date Code Label

Q. What impact will exposure to high temperatures for an extended period of time have on DEF?

A. While DEF exposure to constant, high storage temperature may have some impact on shelf life, this should not concern operators. Extensive testing in very hot climates has been conducted confirming that DEF stored at a constant temperature of 95 deg F had a shelf life of over 6 months.

I've kept DEF in my house if there is some left over. Maybe I've got lucky because I never checked the date codes before. Thanks for the heads up.

I disagree with you on the date code theory. I have ran DEF that was 4 years old, stored in a tool box in my truck for 4 years in the hot and cold weather here in the South. Similar for opened jugs of DEF that was left over from a fill at a Ford Quick Change lube place. Not one ounce of problems with it. Not sure where you got your info but I totally disagree with it.

I still have no problems running "old DEF". Even open containers. I am sure I am not the only one who has used "old DEF" with no issues.

I don't worry about it. I usually have a little left over and store in the laundry room till needed. When I need def I go to wally world or autozone and pic some up.

As long as the container has not been tampered with, I buy it and pour it in.
