Just replaced my fuel filter and this is what came out of the fuel bowl.I assume that's oil. Is injector o rings the only possability? I would assume there is no way to tell wich one? It's not ok to drive is it? Thanks for any and all input.
No, it can't be oil. If it was oil it would be mixed pretty good with the diesel. I'd drain of the fuel, and see what it really is, could be dirty water? Shake up the bottle, and see if it separates easily. If it does, then it's dirty water. If not, let us know. Usually if you lose an inj o-ring, you'll get fuel in the coolant, and oil would just burn off.
I just shook the container and it doesnt mix, in a few seconds it separates and goes to the bottom. It looks a bit red almost like Trans fluid mabe a bit darker. I have new red elc coolant and a new degas bottle and cannot see anything in the coolant.
I also smelled the coolant and it smells clean, no diesel smell. I'm making lunch for my daughter and after I will pour off the diesel and try to see what the mystery redish fluid is.
Like he said, could just be old azz water that's been sitting in your bowl long enough to where algae started growing. I wouldn't worry a whole lot, BUT to be on the safe side, I'd buy a small bottle of algeacide from a boat store and run it for a little in your fuel, just to be sure. You DON'T want that crap gumming up you fuel system!
X2 on the biocide. algae in you tank can be a nightmare. I know someone who paid big bucks to have a dealer clean his. Of coarse that was a dealer but still. I store about 250gal. and use a biocide just to be safe. Had my tank out about 3 weeks ago for hutch mod and blast and paint the tank, and it was clean after 11yrs.
Yep I had the same thing algae in the fuel tank. It took about 4 tanks of fuel treated with a double dose of biocide to get everything cleaned out. I used PowerService Bio Kleen BIO KLEEN® DIESEL FUEL BIOCIDE: A dual-phase biocide to kill microbes, bacteria and fungus., I got it at my local NAPA. John Deere also sells biocide.
Dump (I think it was 2 ounces for 30 gal) Bio Kleen in the tank then fill the tank with Diesel. Let the tank sit over night to work. After the first treatment I just dumped more in at each fill. After 2 tanks worth I figured it was running good so I had got it all...my truck started running rough at idle so I ran another 2 tanks and now no problems.
Here is what I found when I looked in my fuel bowl
It is hard to see in the picture but the filter was all red and fuzzy.
I drained my spin on prefilter/water separator and it had nothing but clean fuel. Whatever I got in my fuel must have happened before I installed the spin on filter a few weeks ago. Thanks for the input. I will be using biocide as suggested. A friend just gave me a bottle. I also will start draining and checking for water regularly. Thanks again.
I believe I know where I got it from. It was a place about 5 tanks ago. It was cheaper( big mistake aparently) it was 20 bio and my truck ran like crap. MPG's were down by 5mpg. I will never go cheap again!!
