I wouldn't recommend buying such a large quantity. For as long as it takes to use 5 gallons, you would be long beyond the expected shelf life before you used more than half of a drum. Filling the truck at the bulk pump as well as a pair of 2.5 gal jugs would be at least 3-4 months supply for most people.
I put 2500-3500 miles a week on my truck, a 55 gallon drum wouldn't last me very long at 4600 miles to a DEF fill up.
And I could always get a 30 gallon drum if I was worried about it going bad.
And I could split it with my dad, he puts just as many miles a week on his truck.
Just drove a thousand miles to Florida and got the dreaded '800 miles to go' DEF warning. A Pilot fueling station had it at the pump. So convenient, and so much cheaper. Was awesome for the pump to offer diesel fuel, then offer DEF, all on the same transaction.
I think I read back in 2009 when they were talking about the def and putting it in big trucks and peterbuilt rose the question what if people just put water in it and they said its for emergency purposes only. And seeing that the def is over 40% water and shoots into the exhaust filtered water would be cheaper if you didnt care about emissions right? Im just wondering

No, that won't work. The exhaust has a NOx sensor that monitors the system for proper operation. If you put water in there you will get a message stating that your DEF is contaminated in short order, and you'll be paying a dealer to pump out your tank.
Thanks, I have a truck stop (Donna's exit 202 on I 5 north Marysville, WA) about 1/2 mile from my work. Wonder if they have it ?

Most Loves, Flying J and Pilot truck stops offer DEF at the pump as well as a few others. Look for a sign saying the sell DEF at the pump.
But, be aware that at most, you will need an adapter to get the check valve in the nozzle to open. The adapter has a magnet in it that opens the valve when you slip it over the end of the nozzle.
I got my adapter at one of the Loves that I stop at.
I fill DEF from a pump at my local Cenex and have never even seen a adapter. Do all other truck stops require a adapter to fill ?
Apparently not, if you are getting it from the pump with no adapter.
But the ones at Loves, Flying J and pilot do, those are the places I get mine from.
And that adapter is a real PITA, only lets about 1/2" of the nozzle stick out to put into the DEF filler neck. And that makes the automatic pump shut off not work real well, I end up with a little bit of DEF spilling out at the end of the fill up.

Never have used an adapter at ANY station I've used their def pumps on...
granted I've not been to every station, but every one since 2011 I've been to has never required an adapter... including Houston area ones
I have the Pilot/Flying J rewards card and have used it from Texas to Florida and up to Missouri without an adapter - also been to more than a few Love's and no adapter...
might try it without an adpater and you might be surprised...

When I tried it without the adapter all it would do is trickle out, with it it flowed fully.
But hey, I'll try it next time and see, maybe they've changed the way they work since I first got my truck.
