If you are talking about your 2000 there are two speed sensors on the trans. Neither one will set a P0500. I don't know which one of what Rock Auto is listing are the right ones.
FORD MOTOR COMPANY REVISION DATE: NOVEMBER 12, 2007 PAGE 50 OF 55
4R100 (E4OD) (RWD) Transmission
(turbine speed sensor in most applications)
Transmission Inputs
The Digital Transmission Range (DTR) sensor provides a single analog and three digital inputs to the PCM. ThePCM decodes the inputs to determine the driver-selected gear position (Park, Rev, Neutral, OD, 2, 1). This inputdevice is checked for opens and invalid input patterns. (P0708, P0705)The Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS), Turbine Shaft Speed (TSS) sensor and Output Shaft Speed (OSS) sensor, ifequipped, are analog inputs that are checked for rationality. If the engine rpm is above the torque converter stallspeed and engine load is high, it can be inferred that the vehicle must be moving. If there is insufficient output fromthe VSS sensor, a malfunction is indicated (P0500). If there is insufficient output from the TSS sensor, amalfunction is indicated (P0715). If there is insufficient output from the OSS sensor, a malfunction is indicated(P0720)
Been too busy to get a definite diagnosis on this yet. I'm hoping to finally get some time to play with it over the weekend.
I think I can rule out wiring. This is the first time I've noticed this, but on the way to work this morning. The speedometer would always work over 45-50, but would fall down to zero as soon as I slowed down to below 45.
I'll stop stop posting more thoughts to this thread and just report back after I put the sensor in.
Finally had time to put the speed sensor in today. It did not fix anything.
I also spent some time trying to track down the rear left brake/blinker light not working. I am getting power at the connector under the master cylinder, but the power does not make it back to the connecter above the spare tire.
Connectors on both ends look clean, and visual inspection at a few points along the way shows no signs of damage. I'm starting to think that the leaky cruise control switch on the master cylinder that the PO left unattended for years may be a factor here. I can see the the harness has been soaked with fluid, and both the brake lights and speed sensor wiring are all in this same harness.
I may try to locate a whole new harness at a junk yard, does anyone know what trucks will interchange?
I know it will need to be SC/SB truck for length, and I'm guessing a gas powered truck because I believe the wiring for the fuel sending unit is also in the harness. I have no idea what years will work, or if a V8 harness would work in a V10 truck.
Happy to report I found and fixed the problem tonight. I started pulling the wiring harness as far apart as I could get it without removing it from the truck (pulled all the tape and took it off of some of the mounts, pulled all of the wires out of the sheath for long distances except where the fuel tank would not allow)
Just behind the fuel filter, my brake light wire had been pinched, I figured if something had physically damaged the harness at this point, the odds of the VSS wiring being damaged at this same point were pretty good. I checked over the green/black and red/white wires and found a break in the red/white wire just a couple inches behind the break in the tail light wire.
Fixed both wires and drove it home from work, Speedometer works, right blinker works correctly, and no more ABS light. Thanks for your help on this Mark.
