Insurance experience

1979 F250 Regular Cab 4x4 V8 400ci
Accident within 3 years-100% fault

So I had insurance with a company up the street. It was a horrible experience as they couldnt enter the Vin number so he used a false one, and even used a false payment method to get the policy through. I didnt really care what he did because i just needed proof of insurance for the DMV. He also was going to charge me $175 broker fee.

Anyway, so i go online last night to avoid any further broker fees and this is my experience.

LIABILTY ONLY!!!
Progressive- $125 down included first 2 months, $75/month. I had to call them and they had a mess of a time entering in the Vin, and their online clicker year only went to 1981. I had initially filled out everything online then had to go over everything on the phone. Total time: 1 1/2 hours

Esurance: $113 down, includes first 2 months. $61/month. Same hassle with the Pre 1981 vin. And again, i had to call em for vin and go over the complete policy. They said that the policy would show as a 1981 vehicle. Total time:1 hour

Infinity Insurance: Their Vin clicker went well into the '60s. I did it completely online, no phone calls or being put on hold. Total time 20 minutes. $40 down/ $41 a month!

It may not be the best coverage, idk, but basic liabilty is all i need.

I have all my stuff with State Farm and I pay $20 a month for liability. I do have 250 deduct. For comprehensive and everything else seems to be minimum liability coverages, but I can't remember. My agent just said this is the coverage I want for the most part. I'm supposed to have discounted insurance since I have home and multiple auto policies with them.

I've had progressive for years with no issues. I pay $45/mo liab for two trucks. I've never had trouble adding my 78/9's to my policy when I sell one and buy another. They show correct on my policy.

Would you really be insured if you used a false vin number ?

I use State Farm for my 77 F250 4X4. $23 a month for full coverage. No comp deductible and $250 on collision.

My DD is with travelers and my agent writes the classics with Chubbs.

I have stated value full coverage; no restrictions
78 f250 super cab 4wd = 116 yr valued 20k
80 cj7 = 78 yr valued 10k
89 suburban = 168 per year valued 8k

All have 500k liability and zero deductible for comp and collusion.

Most of my vehicles are covered by Grange Insurance, and I've had no problems. They're competitively priced, and I get discounts because my home is covered through the same outfit. I'm not sure Grange is available everywhere, though.

As for Buford, I'm covered by American Collector. The reason is that I had to get an agreed upon value policy, and had to go through the process of getting an appraisal to determine value. It's a bit expensive, but it's a fairly large investment to protect.

I'll add my 2 cents:

1) Comprehensive and collision coverage on these trucks with conventional insurance is a wash. It doesn't take much damage for the truck to be declared a total loss in many circumstances. And if you're like many of us, the check you would get wouldn't cover the time and money you may have put into your truck over the last few years. If you bought your truck for cheap and don't have a lot into it, or comprehensive and collision isn't that much more expensive, then there's no harm in it. But there's a mathematical limit where it's actually cheaper to forgo that added coverage and pay out of pocket considering the age and value of these trucks. In that case, you're best served with insurance that protects other people and their property from YOU (liability) and YOU from other people (described below). If you've got a lot of money in your truck, you're really better off taking a look at some of the restoration-level classic auto insurers.

2) Uninsured motorist coverage is really something to consider. I hear different numbers from different organizations, but the number of uninsured drivers in Texas is something like 30%. My truck got totaled by an uninsured, drunk, underage illegal about 6 years ago. It sat on a frame machine for about 2 weeks. Because I had that extra coverage (State Farm), I was pretty well taken care of.

I've had State Farm all my life as well as the last 2 generations of my family. They are top notch. Sometimes they're more expensive, but you get what you pay for. Beware of bargain insurance places like Geico or some of these noname minimal-coverage places. They're tempting with their super-low rates, but those rates sky rocket after your first claim.

What I have insured isn't a dent, but I have liability on my 67 Galaxy. listed as a 390 car, actually uses the real vin and lists correctly on my policy and was simple to add. I did it through Farm Bureau insurance and costs me $252/yr

legally if your card and insurance policy doesn't show your vehicle properly you are NOT insured either for an accident or if a cop gives you a ticket. If you go to court a judge will find you guilty of not having insurance, and the insurance company will tell you that they didn't insure your 79 F150 so you weren't covered while driving it. If they don't offer the ability to enter early VIN's the company doesn't actually insure any vehicle older then 81

I have safety insurance now, I pay just under 1000.00 for 65 f-100 / 79 F-150 / 99 Grand Marque, and 2007 sport track, the Sport track is the only one that has collision on it. But they are all covered for comp, uninsured drivers and medical.

I thought i was getting a great deal, lol. My insurance has never been below $75/month on any vehicle. My driving record has never been clean though either.

Don't know about the rest of the guys but I'm pushing 61 and have 0 in the accident catagory so I'm guessing a get a pretty good rate.
