I,ve got a freind who needs a title for his 52 1.5 ton. What is the best way to go about this. I have found a company but they want something like $500 to supply a title.
The process varies from state to state. Here in New Mexico I had to take my truck to the DMV to have them do a VIN inspection, they also did an NCIC check. These checks are to make sure the vehicle isn't stolen and can take anywhere from a few days to a couple of weeks. After my VIN came back clear I had to go to title company and get a surety bond. Once I had the surety bond and proof of insurance then I took it back to DMV and I got my tags, title and license. I think the whole thing was less than $200.
I almost forgot, I also had a Bill of Sale.
Call yourlocal DMV and see what they say. You might be suprised
Call or visit your DMV main office and ask what he needs to do to title an untitled restored/rebuilt vehicle. Every state has a procedure for titling such a vehicle. Usually it includes producing a bill of sale for the major components and the VIN # or having a new vin # issued. DON'T go to one of the "title mills", most states are catching on to this ruse, and he'll just end up out 500.00.
He may have to play phone tag to get to a person who actually knows the procedure. Most clerks at the sattellite offices are clueless. A number of states now have the procedure and even the forms available online. He might check www.(his state).gov
Had you posted the state it's possible someone here has been thru it's process.
It CT The procedure is quite involved, (talking with DMV person #1, Easy as pie with #2, not possable with #3, involves the DMV, State police, and a Licenced dealer from #4, All of the above AND trailer it to DMV for a safety inspection from #5
What I actually had to do was; 1. Bill of sale. 2. Vin verification (from local dealer who came to my house), And that was it. 2 pieces of paper (and crossed fingers) and tags!
But if I happened to get DMV person #2 at the counter, or DMV person #3, it would have been quite different. It's a real crap shoot, all depends on the person on the other side of the counter (and if you don't give them an attitude) You can give the attitude AFTER you get the plates in your hand.
The best bet would be to talk with someone that's done it already, or and local chapter of a hot rod club.
I was scared sh&% less about having to trailer a F-5 30 miles one way for a safety inspection. The truck is 100 percent re-built, 100% would have passed easily, but the last time I did this the inspector said to me "You know I wont' pass you on the first try" and he did'nt. "found" a pencil size rot hole in the door jam on my '74, that was enough.

Here in California you are able to apply for a 'Salvage Title', which takes care of everything.
Louisiana looks to be the same as most states I directed him to the Department of Public Safety of the state he lives in. His profile says he lives in LA.
