VIN History

Does anyone know how these VIN check companies are able to obtain the information so quick? I would prefer doing it myself. I've already sent emails to my state's DMV. I wonder what they will say?

Your state's DMV is only going to provde history from the state, nothing from out of state. Carfax gathers data from all the DMVs, insurance CLUE reports (something not included from the DMV) and more. Don't cheap yourself out, being penny wise and pound foolish. A month long unlimited Carfax account is only $25, a small price to pay to look up a lot of vehicles, get a guarantee, and much better data. Is $25 on a vehicle that's going to cost thousands worth it? You betcha!

I finally got a reply from my state's DMV. And yes Carfax or Auto Check is definitely the way to go even if the information is not complete. A little information is better than nothing, IMHO. To access the records in Arkansas you pay an annual $75.00 fee then $1.50 for each report.
