95 F-250 E4OD wont engage D

Hey everyone,

Having an issue with my trans not engaging when I put the gear selector into the "D" position. It will engage very slowly until I get up to about 20mph. If I put the gear selector in 2 or 1 the truck takes off as it should. Reverse works fine too. Seems to be going thru gears correctly as well so I'm kind of stumped with this one. I just put a new filter and fresh fluid in along with a bottle of lucas stop slip. The problem was going on prior to fluid and filter change. (Yes the fluid is right in the middle of where it should be and was checked at operating temp in park). Any help is really appreciated.

Well if you can, QUIT driving it til it's fixed! You're only hurting the transmission by letting it slip, so if you have something else to drive, park the truck for now til we can get it right. Not trying to be a dick here, sorry, but it don't take much to burn up a slipping clutch. Trust me... I've done it on a 4R70W, another Ford auto trans.

Now you said you checked the fluid hot in park, but did you go thru all the other gears first? You start at park, go to each position on the shifter (give it time to engage) and then make your way back to park, then stick it for a reading.

Also, do you know how to check the computer for fault codes? That needs to be done also, even if your check engine light ain't on.

Dixie-

I went through all the clutches about 15 times when I changed the filter and fluid. I havent been driving it alot and if I did have to drive it, I started in 2 from a stop and popped in to D once I got going. It shifts right into third when I drive it that way. I will check for codes today and let you know what I find.

Thanks

Good. Yeah the only difference in manual 1st gear (shifter position 1) and auto 1st gear (shifter position OD) is that in manual 1st your coast clutch is also applied, and the EEC jacks the line pressure up a bit.

Exception is if you're in auto 1st with the O/D OFF light on, in which case your coast clutch is also applied.

ok checked codes got 621, 622 and 628. looks like thats the first two shift solenoids and excessive tcc slippage. I'm going to double check electrical connections and if that doesn't do it, should i replace the solenoid pack?

Think I found the culprit. The pins from the solenoid pack plug actually corroded into the harness plug. Going to get a new connector from the dealer and put in another solenoid pack out of a donor e4od. Anyone have a part number for the harness connector?
