Weird Shifting Problem
I have a 2000 Ford Ranger 3.0L Flex Fuel Automatic 2WD. Yesterday it started having a problem shifting into Drive after it had been sitting for about 30 minutes. Reverse would work fine and once the it got into gear for drive it works fine, from stops and shifting gears as I accelerate. It's only when I change it from Park to Drive that it doesn't shift right. It's like the gear isn't going into place, kind of like when you are driving a Manual and you don't release the clutch right and get a jerk when you feel the gear catch. I don't believe I'm looking at a transmission problem persay. If I open the hood toward the front right (driver's side there is a hose with a white plastic filter connecting into another big black part. The last couple of times I've removed that and blown out the filter before starting the vehicle and it seems to correct the issue. Obviously I'm not very technically minded when it comes to vehicles so I have no idea what that part is so that I can get a new filter for it. Any clues and what other things could cause this type of problem?

to get a replacement filter, just take the filter off and take it into your favorite auto parts store. Tell them where it is located, and they should be able to match it up with a new one. If you say that fixes the problem when it is cleaned, that is where I'd start. I don't know too much about trannies. Check and make sure your fluid level is where it's supposed to be, low fluid in an automatic can cause shifting problems, I beleive. The engine should be running when you check the fluid level.
