Need fuel heater help.

Last night 5deg of course, my truck shut off on the way home. Rail mounted fuel pump not running. No "Wait to start" Light. So I got it towed home. After trying all the normal stuff (CPS etc) I found fuse 30 under the dash was blown. Disconnected fuel heater, new fuse and started right up. Could a fuel heater cause this fuse to blow? Its original. I do have a 6pos chip. but its never caused a problem. Any input would be great. Thanks, Tim

Tim J,
That is a common failure.
The fuel heater in the filter bowl fails over time and can short out causing the fuse to blow.
When that fuse blows you get no start.
Carry a spare fuse actually you should carry a fuse kit with a tester and spare fuses.

I didn't know to look there until this morning. It felt like cps failure at first. Do you know if I can run in the winter with out it for a day. I have treated fuel. Thanks

Fuel Bowl Heater Element - Riffraff Diesel Performance

Also, check the 42 pin motor wire harness plug on the driver side valve cover. some times it falls down and rubs the valve cover. the lowest wire in the harness happens to be the wire for the Fuel bowl heater. over time it will rub through and short out on the valve cover there..

I was thinking would it be a good idea to run the heater on a switch so if its cold you can turn it on?

Thanks Franko72. That thread answered my questions. I am going to put a temporary led indicator to let me know when it is on. My e99 is cold blooded and will start down to 0 using my remote start and no block heater. Colder than that and I start it manually, unless ive plugged it in.

Just for info. If you unplug the fuel bowl heating element, it will also disable the water in fuel light. To get around this open the fuel bowl and disconnect the heater from the inside of the fuel bowl, and leave the external connection connected that way the water in fuel indicator will still work.

I replaced the heater this morning. My e99 had the early plate and wire style, but the newer style seemed to fit just fine. Thanks again everyone!
