Would be first time diesel owner, found a CLEAN 04 f250 lariat fx4 with 197k miles. according to dealer previous owner supposedly is a diesel mechanic at a local ford dealership with all maintenance records. I have heard/read about some of the problems with the 6.0. my question is what should I look for in these records to be pretty confident in potentially buying.. and how can I go about obtaining an OASIS report. Thanks.
Your local dealer. But for real they are pretty useless because the only thing on them are what was covered under warranty. get you a scangauge and read some vitals from the truck before buying. There a bunch of post here where people asked the exact question as you. But what I would look for on the surface is what kind of coolant and if it has oem filters. That will tell alot about the truck and how it was taken care of.
If the owner is truly a mechanic at a Ford dealership, he should be able to obtain the OASIS report fairly easy. Look for repetitive problems or a whole lot of different problems.
The truck is at an used car dealership now, they have given me the previous owners info to contact, i guess the better question would be what kinds of questions i should ask the prev owner, and what should I be concerned about going forward.. I know this may be repetitive to you guys but I just want to be sure I'm covering all bases here
For what it's worth I'm with you--these guys/this forum--will tell you ALL you need to know. I am in the process of finding one and they have given me everything I need to know so far to be knowledgeable enough to understand what to look for when buying or fixing. Thanks to these guys I understand what fixes may need to be done and have 100% confidence in buying a 6.0L needing work or not.

I would ask him what kind of oil and filters he used? How often he changed oil? Has he ever checked the ficm voltage? Did he have a scangauge or something like that to keep track of the vitals of the truck as in eot and ect. What kind of work has been done and did they use oem parts. How often he changed fuel filters and are they oem. Stuff like that.

For a 6.0 with 197,000 miles on it, I would assume the motor is bad, even if it runs perfect, until proven otherwise.
I Actually felt a little better about buying mine with some miles on it (151,773). The way I looked at it was, that most of the small issues would've/should've been worked out already for it to have made it that far without catastrophic failure. Fortunately I found one that was super clean, one owner, and appeared that the previous owner cared about maintaining the truck. The one thing I was truly nervous about was the diesel itself, mainly because I have never owned one and it is somewhat foreign to me, especially when it comes to diagnosing issues. However....I have done a ton of reading on here as well as asked some local guru's also posted a few noob questions on here too. I really feel confident that I can work myself through some of the issues when they come up. It's not rocket science like I thought it would be. the worst part I have now, is learning what all the abbreviation's mean that the other members on here use. lol.
Oh, mine does have a bad turbo though. Just nuts and bolts. easy fix.
