Engine Removal E-350

Well well, I changed out the oil cooler gaskets and o-rings, the power steering pump and steering gear box on the ambulance this past weekend and when looking for leaks on all the installs when I saw the drivers side head fizzing air where the head mates to the block . There is no oil in the water or water in the oil, I did find a post where the heads can be changed out without pulling the engine but there maybe a leak or two coming from the oil pan also, I have also read the oil pan can be re-sealed with the engine in but it takes a while to do it. I am thinking just pull the engine and check it out and fix those two items and look for other issues it may have. How many hours am I looking at doing this job having never removed a engine from a E? Might as ask to about what hoist to get for the job By the way the thing seems to me like it is running fine and it has never over heated on me but I have only had it a few months and I do not know the history of it, the odometer is reading 10200 so I hope its 110200 but what the heck do I know lol lol......

I'm 100% sure this is possible. I think it was IDIJohn or MacGyver that sent me pics of his engine rebuild, and I think they were able to do this, and I think they could elaborate on that.

Everything I've read says that you have to pull the motor to change the pan gasket. Bummer, but that's the deal with our engines.

If you are pulling the engine, do the pan while you can.

I've never pulled my engine, but if you do, be sure to post pics. I'd like to learn from your experience. I know there are other van guys here that have pulled their engine, so I defer to them on this.

Getting the engine out of a van is a giant pain even with a gasser, I think the 300-6 is harder than the diesel aside from weight though.
You need to get the hoist as low as you can to get the engine up and out of there, if you have one of the common folding style engine hoists then the little chain may need to be replaced with a ring or quick link to get enough clearance. Keep the chain to the lift points as short as possible.
Just about the whole front end comes off, the center section of the radiator support unbolts but the bumper and valance panel have to come off first.
Here's my old 78 with the new 300 sitting in it to give an idea of the front opening:

The oil pan on these things is pretty deep, so the engine has to be lifted a fair bit to clear everything on the way out. Make sure to support the trans as well.

wow, Ford engineers... Nice oil filter orientation on that 300. Betcha it pee's all over the side of the engine and pan everytime you need to change the filter.

It's not too bad, you just have to be quick. The oil stays a bit cleaner too-

removing the engine from one of these is pretty straightforward as described. remove the whole front end like in ford-six's pic, have your hoist as close to the engine as possible, and hoist it out like any other. here's a whole album of pics from when i did the job on mine https://www.dropbox.com/sh/yqyzndbsor78nzl/Q2s5iApfRS note that i did it with the intake off, which is no big deal since you're taking it off anyway. and here's the whole thread from when i did the job in mine https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...ad-gasket.html

Josh... sorry I couldn't remember it was you that shared your photos of your rebuild. if I had remembered, I would have cited you directly.
