Easier pull my engine for oil pan?

Driving a 1995 150 with the I6 and e4od, 4x4. Engine has got 195k miles on it. Just got back from a road trip and now its leaking oil ALL over the motor. I'm planning on just replacing the gaskets. Everything on this motor is original except the plugs. Compression and oil pressure is pretty good and it runs great. I was going through a quart of oil per fill up so its time. Should I start planning for an engine pull? Is it worth it? Just asking anyone else have to do this job and would like your input thanks. Think my oil pan is rusting out so its going too.

I can't say for sure about that engine in that truck, but I've read that in a lot of these trucks you CAN change the oil pan gasket with the engine in the truck, but that you need to unbolt a motor mount (or two) and lift the engine a few inches to make room.

In my '71 Bronco I can get the pan in and out without lifting the engine. It's still a royal pain. So especially with the idea of replacing a bunch of other gaskets, it would probably be easier in the long run to yank the engine.

I have the same engine in a 93. I pulled it, put it on a stand and replaced all gaskets and seals. Also had the head serviced including new guides. Far easier for me in the long run than bending over a fender.

I had to unbolt the motor mounts,

lift the motor with a engine hoist,

unbolt the transmission from the cross member,

and jack the transmission up some,

to get my oil pan off and back on.

You can do it without pulling the engine. I did mine just the same as the post above. Remove the motor mounts, loosen transmission crossmember bolts, jack the engine up and drop the pan down onto the engine crossmember. It sucks, but can be done.

But if you have the tools and the time to pull the engine, it will make replacing everything a lot easier.

I have changed the oil pan gasket on a 351w in truck twice, but only because it was the only gasket I was changing. I can't speak for whether or not it is possible with the 4.9. You have to remove the upper plenum of the intake manifold to get vertical clearance and then unbolt the motor and transmission mounts and lift the whole assembly. Then you have to be very careful not to let anything drop into the pan while doing the job. Helpful tip - You can stretch a new gasket around the pan from the bottom instead of blindly fishing it around the oil pick up tube.

The thing is you have done most of the work of pulling the engine and for a lot of folks it is worth it to just go ahead and pull it and work on a stand with ease. If you have a lot of gaskets to do than it is probably worth it to just pull it. And if it is worth pulling, you might as well tote it down to the machine shop for inspection and any needed work. At the very least have the head checked over. In for a penny...

Also, a good time to inspect and if needed replace mounts.
