This is my first post in this site as well as my first F100(1973). I've always wanted one since my dad and my grandpa both had one. I do have one question. I am changing all the gaskets in my 360 and was wondering if its possible to remove the oil pan without removing the engine. There doesn't seem to be a lot room between the pan and the crossmember. Thanks for any help.
If you're changing all of the gaskets, it's much easier to pull the engine.
If you are including the head gaskets and the timming chain cover gaskets in your plans then pulling the engine would make for a better and much easier job. If you are not going that far or don't want to pull the engine then you can change the oil pan gasket without pulling the engine.
You will need to remove the radiator shroud, coolant hoses, undo both motor mounts and possible the exhaust pipes from the manifold. Then you can lift the engine up with a crane or chain hoist enough to get the pan down.
With all this needing to be done, it's almost quicker in the long run to remove the engine, then you can do some under hood clean up and paint if you want with the engine in the way. I changed a pan gasket with the engine in an now that you reminded me, ------------PULL THE ENGINE. lol
That's what I was thinking but i don't think my cherry picker will lift the engine high enough to clear the rad support. I guess i could just take the front tires off and set the truck on my shorter jack stands.
if all your going to do is change the oil pan gasket then its not that hard to do with the engine in. you need to unbolt the engine from its mounts and lift it with an engine hoist or something else that attaches from the top. its not hard to drop the oil pan but putting it in is a little more difficult. if you have someone to help you its much easier. make sure to line up the gaskets properly especially the rubber seals in the valley, otherwise they can be cut when you bolt it back up(someone did that to mine thats why i had to replace it). you have to be carefull because it takes a little figiting to get the pan around the oil pump pickup. and dont over tighten! with a little patients this is a relatively easy fix.
