E4OD Rebuild

1994 E4OD Transmission.

Transmission was slipping terrible after vehicle warmed up. After feeling around for thoughts, it was suggested by numerous people that the transmission needed an overhaul.

Upon Disassembley the clutches were found to be excellent. They are actually thicker than the new ones in the kit. By .015" actually. Quite impressive considering they are 20 years old.

So now, I have kind of lost direction. If the original clutches are thicker than the new ones, and don't show signs of wear. What does that mean?

The fluid is pretty good, and there aren't fragments of metal. Nor is there any metallic shimmering to the color. It doesn't smell burnt or rotten either.

I have drained the torque converter and filled it with gasoline. I am going to spin it and hopefully knock any sediment loose.

Anybody have any thoughts?

I've posted pictures if you care to see them...

If the transmission were slipping the clutches would be burnt black, or not even there. So it wasn't slipping. What exactly were the symptoms?

When the vehicle was cold, it would shift through the gears, albeit sloppy. It shuttered a bit. The warmer the engine and transmission got, the more the transmission would slip. The engine speed would increase, but the vehicle speed would not. It didn't matter if it was in 1,2,D or OD, they all slipped. I would disengage the OD, and if the vehicle was still traveling over 50, I could put it in and out without a problem. The fluid was up, clean, all of the solenoids were triggering. The MLPS, TPS, VSS were all new. The connections were all clean and true. Very Odd...

I tore down the forward planetary, and that's when everything made sense. The spring plate was shattered, the Metal Ring that it sits on was mangled, the clutches and steels were burnt up and warped. I found the problem. Odd, everything else inside was perfect. So what causes this?

My SWAG* is that the seal probably failed first. This causes a pressure leak, which allows this clutch to slip. The heat generated from the slippage causes all the other failures you see.

Makes Sense. My rebuild kit did not come with that spring plate, nor the round steel, so, I had to order that. Project is at a halt until that stuff arrives.
