E4OD Problems
I own a 1993 F150 300 Six E4OD 4 WD with 197,000 mi. Last fall it developed a chatter/shudder in overdrive only. Doesn't do it all the time, just intermittent.
Called the Ford shop and spoke with a mechanic, he said the clutches were sticking in the torque converter, and if the fluid was changed it should remedy the problem. Talked with another guy who rebuilds transmissions, he said the reason for the chatter/shudder was that the seals were shot in the transmission and the pump could not hold pressure on the clutch disc.
I was thinking if the seals were going bad it would chatter/shudder in all gears and not just in overdrive. The transmission guy said it would get worse but so far has stayed the same.
A re-man will run approximately $1600. Can also have removed, rebuilt & installed for same price with updates and improved shifting.
I have not attempted to fix the problem yet and was wondering if anyone else has had a similar situation.

I've fixed many transmissions that have shudder by changing the trans fluid. It's your choice, because a complete rebuild will fix it, too. They put new fluid in after a rebuild, so the problem is fixed!
